Death toll rises to 10 in the aftermath of Ebute Metta building collapse

The death toll arising from the collapse of a three storey building in Lagos has risen to 10 persons with the discovery of two persons including a four-year-old boy and a female youth corps member on Monday.

The three-storey building located along Ibadan Street, Ebute Metta, Lagos collapsed late Sunday night with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service commencing rescue operations shortly after the collapse.

As at Sunday, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported that twenty persons have been rescued from the collapse as rescue operations proceeded.

However, dead bodies are also being recovered from the rubles. As at Monday, May 2, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that the death toll from the building collapse is now 10.

According to the South West Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, two additional bodies including a four-year-old boy and a female youth corps member was recovered on Monday.

“The number of rescued occupants remains 23, while six males and four females have been so far recovered dead,” Mr Farinloye told News Agency of Nigeria.

Rescue operations are still ongoing at the site of the incident in search of occupants trapped under the rubble.
