AMELTAN President reacts to circular, accused MLSCN of negligence

The President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Technicians and Assistants of Nigeria (AMELTAN), Com Isijana Samuel Owurong III, has reacted to the circular released by the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) to suspend the collection of the AMELTAN dues pending the time another National Executive of AMELTAN is constituted and formally presented to the council.
The President made this known in a voice note made available to Eagles eye update over the weekend that he (Com Isijana) is not the problem but council are not ready to do the needful by issuing a practicing license to Medical Laboratory Technicians, inclusion of Technicians into the membership of the board and conversion of technician certificate from professional to academic certificates.

He added that the council had stopped the collection of AMELTAN dues since 2019 when they asked the council to do the needful for the Technicians.

Com Isijana, outlined some of the problems and solutions as follows:

1. Licensure: Issuance of Practicing license for medical Laboratory Technicians to replace annual registration or work permit in accordance to section 19 subsection 2(b) of the MLSCN ACT 2003.

2. Membership: Inclusion of Medical Laboratory Technicians into the membership of MLSCN board, and inclusion of Technicians as member of the council in section 10 subsection 1 of the MLSCN ACT 2003.

3. Certificate conversion: Following the circular released by the office of the Head of Service of the Federation over the use of only Academic qualification for entry into the civil/public service of the Federation, MLSCN should make a move to convert: Medical Laboratory Assistants certificate to be equivalent to National Diploma (ND) and Medical Laboratory Technicians certificate to be equivalent to Higher National Diploma (HND).

4. Task force: Inclusion of the members of AMELTAN into the Council task force.

The President concluded that he did not have any issue with any Technician, but it was the council the want to create division in the association so that they (AMELTAN) will loss focus on the agitation for their right.

Following the release of the voice note, some members registered their grievances on the president for keeping quiet since and advice him to step aside for the continuation of the successful journey.
