Emefiele’s sack is a rumour, says CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked reports Buhari sacks CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele

Responding to inquiries on Wednesday, May 26, 2022, CBN’s spokesman Osita Nwanisobi said he read report of his purported sack in some media like everyone else.

He said: “I also heard the same way you heard it. Honestly, to me I’m not aware of that development”.

Recall, the CBN Governor has been under pressure to resign from his position since he declared interest in running for president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023.

The rumoured report of his sack surfaced on social media early morning on Wednesday.

Although many argued that President Muhammadu Buhari does not have the power to sack a CBN governor without the approval of the Senate, several others suggested that the President will always get express approval if he wishes to do so.
