ALERT: Fake Customer Care Twitter Handle Is Asking for GTBank Customers’ Details

An imposter calling themselves a Guaranty Trust (GT) Bank customer service agent is requesting banking information under the pretext of dispute resolution assistance.

The imposter, who identifies as Joy, operates through a Twitter account with the handle, @gauranrty, opened in May 2022. The account directs customers to send a message to a WhatsApp number, 09071892007, for immediate response and assistance.

When FIJ contacted this WhatsApp line, an automated reply identified the imposter as Joy. This Joy asked for our reporter’s account number and the mail and phone number the account was registered with, and then sent a link to a form.

The form bore the Guaranty Trust Holding Company PLC (GTCO) logo and requested details on the account number, complaints, the last six digits of the card attached to the account, the card pin and bank app password.

These details, especially the digits on the card and the pin, can be used to empty an account.

In a Twitter post dated June 3, 2021, GTBank highlighted five steps to identify its real account or one belonging its affiliates. The first is to look for the verified mark, after which one is expected to check the name and joined date, and then look at the number of followers.
