BREAKING: EFCC arrests former Zamfara Governor, Abdulaziz Yari

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari over a connection with the agency’s ongoing investigation of the N80bn fraud allegation of Ahmed Idris.

The suspended Accountant General of Federation, Ahmed Idris, was arrested by the EFCC on the 16th of May, 2022 and has since then been in custody, answering questions on his alleged N80bn fraud.

Mr Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State, was however arrested on Sunday at his Abuja residence in connection with Ahmed Idris’s alleged N80bn fraud. His arrest comes just a few days after he won the ruling APC’s ticket for Zamfara West senatorial election holding next year. An election he won unopposed.

According to reports, investigators are working with the lead that Mr. Ahmed Idris allegedly conspired with others to steal public funds which, by his role, he was meant to safeguard.

One of his suspected accomplices is Mr Abdulaziz Yari, who was arrested today, EFCC sources told PREMIUM TIMES.

According to the sources, suspicious transactions between Mr Idris and Mr Yari were “in the area of 20 billion Naira”.

Mr. Abdulaziz Yari has a lot of history with the EFCC, in February 2021, he was arrested and grilled by EFCC operatives in Lagos, while the Federal High Court in Abuja had, on January 26, 2021, ordered the final forfeiture of funds belonging to Yari, domiciled in Zenith and Polaris banks.

The judgment followed investigations that Yari had suspicious monies stuffed in his bank accounts including the sum of $56,056.75 reportedly lodged in his account with Polaris Bank; N12.9 million, N11.2 million, $303 million, N217,388.04, and $311.8 million said to be kept in different Zenith Bank accounts in the name of the ex-governor and his companies.

Last year, he was repeatedly held and questioned by the EFCC over allegations he criminally diverted billions in Zamfara’s funds kept in a bank.

Mr Yari was governor of Zamfara State between 2007 and 2019.
