JUST IN: Rivers Accountant General declared wanted for N435bn beats 15 aspirants to emerge governorship candidate

Shortly after being declared wanted for N435bn fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Rivers State Accountant General, Fubara Siminayi, was declared winner of the PDP governorship primary election.

Fubara Siminayi was declared wanted by the EFCC alongside 58 others for allegedly embezzling a huge sum of N435bn. According to the statement by the Commission, they were alleged of criminal conspiracy, money laundering, misappropriation of public funds, and abuse of office.

However, few hours after Fubara Siminayi was declared wanted, he was also declared the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship primaries in Rivers state and will be the flagbearer of the party in 2023 elections.

The chairman of the PDP electoral committee, Walter Mbotu, declared that Mr Fubara scored 721 votes to defeat 15 other aspirants.

Announcing the results, Mr Mbotu said Isaac Kamalu came a distant second with 86 votes while a former Rivers PDP chairman Felix obua got two votes; David Brigs (four), West Morgan (four), Tammy Danagogo (36) and George Kelly (37) while others scored zero vote.

About 898 delegates assembled at the Dr Obi Wali Conference Centre, the venue of the primary election, on Wednesday to vote for their preferred aspirants.

Mr Mbotu said out of 980 expected delegates, 898 were accredited to vote while 8 votes were voided.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has announced that anyone with useful information about his whereabouts should contact any of the Agency’s offices or the nearest police station or other security agencies.

It is unclear if the EFCC is in communication with the leadership of the party in the state who conducted the primary elections to know about his whereabout.
