MLT Accused MLSCN of Neglect
The Medical Laboratory Technicians in Nigeria has accused their council, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) of Neglect and abandonment.
The Medical Laboratory Technicians under the aegis of the concerned members of the Association of Medical Laboratory Technicians and Assistants on Nigeria (AMELTAN), South West zone, said in a separate statements made available for Eagles eye update that,
"MLSCN had reduced us (Technicians) below our contemporary from other cadres like the nurses, Pharmacy Technicians, CHEWs and others" a member that pleaded anonymity claimed.
Another member said "The insults is growing daily even from those who by all standard can't stand up straight with you in anyway now be tossing you back and front etc. I WILL STAND WITH SUCH AGITATION TO MOVE US FORWARD.❤️🌷"
The accusations arosed following several upgrading circulars from other health regulatory bodies like Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria, Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria and others.
But instead of MLSCN following the same progressive path, they released a 3-paged circular dated 1st of February, 2022 with a reference Number MLSCN/LEG/CIR/01/2022 and titled "MANAGEMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORIES BY MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTISTS".
In the circular it was stated that, heading or owning of laboratory(s) by a non Medical Laboratory Scientist is considered to be a quarckery.
Some of the agitations include s but not limited to:
1. MLSCN is interested in the welfarism of only the scientists, neglecting the Assistants and the Technicians.
2. Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) are issuing practicing license to Registered Nurse (RM), Registered Midwife (RM) and Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) but it's a taboo for MLSCN to issue practicing license to Medical Laboratory Technicians alongside Medical Laboratory Scientists.
3. Holder of Registered Nurse (RN) license with five (5) years post qualification experience can own a clinic, even a pharmacy technician can have at least a patent medicine store but a Medical Laboratory Technician of several experience should still work under the supervision of a scientist, even if the scientist is a fresh graduate.
4. Holders of CHEW certificate can proceeds their academic pursuit in some institutions like NOUN but the Board of MLSCN see it as an abomination even after the Senate of those institutions had approved direct entry of BMLS for Medical Laboratory Technicians.
5. Entry points into civil service for Medical Laboratory Scientists is level 9 and Medical Laboratory Technicians is GL6, contrary to their colleagues in other cadres.
Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) is an umbrella body of Medical Laboratory Assistant, Technician and Scientist.
The MLSCN is a Federal Government Statutory Regulatory Agency established by Act 11 of 2003 as a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health.
