Police to deploy 17,374 personnel for Ekiti, Osun governorship elections



The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced 17,374 personnel have been deployed to Ekiti and Osun states for the upcoming elections.

This was disclosed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, on Thursday, June 9, 2022 in Abuja.

He said, “As for how many policemen are deployed to Ekiti or Osun, I can say for the police, just like the minister said, other security agents followed. But as for the police, we are deploying 17,374 policemen.

On the issue of the kidnapping of the Methodist Church Prelate, no arrest has been made in terms of suspects, but we are still on it.

“We have leads; we have some issues that we are still following through, how the ransom was collected and how the negotiations were done. We have information to that effect and we’re looking at getting into the real aspect of getting the suspects arrested.

“As for the issue of helicopter attack, the allegations are there, the assertions are there. We have not been able to say there is any helicopter attack on innocent citizens like you have suggested. but most of the time, these assertions are made and up till now we’ve not been able to see or we’ve not been able to identify any helicopter that is flying and killing people unnecessarily,” he stated.

The Ekiti governorship election is slated for June 18, 2022. Some of the major contenders are; Biodun Oyebanji of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC); Segun Oni, Social Democratic Party (SDP); Wole Oluyede of the African Democratic Congress (ADC); Kemi Elebute-Halle of Action Democratic Party (ADP); Debo Ajayi of the Young Progressive Party (YPP); Ben Agboola of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP); and Bisi Kolawole, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While that of Osun is scheduled to hold on July 16, 2022. The major contenders are; incumbent governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola who is running under the ruling APC, and Ademola Adeleke, People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
