Peter Obi suffers setback in Labour Party as new presidential candidate emerges on INEC deadline day

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has been faced with a fresh setback after a former chairman of the party in Anambra state was declared a factional presidential candidate.

The factional presidential candidate, Jude Ezenwafor was a sole aspirant and was elected through affirmation at the exercise held in Abuja on Wednesday.

The development comes days after Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra, was elected as the presidential candidate of the party at a primary organised in Delta state by the Julius Abure-led faction of the party.

However, before Peter Obi was pronounced as the winner of the LP presidential primary, Calistus Okafor, chairman of another faction of the party had filed a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1636/2021 before a Federal High Court.

The presiding judge of the case, Inyang Ekwo, has however in a May 30 judgement ordered that the LP and some of its executives be served with a fresh suit challenging the party’s leadership, after which the matter was adjourned till June 30 for further mention.

Jude Ezenwafor while speaking on his mission says he is on a rescue mission to free Nigerian from social, economic and political crises currently bedevilling it.

He said: “Labour is leading a revolutionary course. Labour Party will win the general election. Our party is going to take over Nigeria and bring back the glory Nigeria needs.

Ezenwafor a former aide to Willie Obiano, former governor of Anambra, also served under Peter Obi while he was Governor of the state.

Okafor, factional chairman of the LP of the party, described the candidate as “a man of integrity”.

“Having met all the requirements of the party, we hereby affirm you to be the presidential candidate of the Labour Party come 2023,” he said.

Meanwhile, this new development comes at a time the June 9 deadline set for conclusions of primaries of political parties is fast approaching.

The party as of this point now has two presidential candidates and thereafter announces the winners of the polls.

“I am fighting for what is my right. I am not fighting my brother. Those who think I’m being used should have a rethink,” Okafor said.
