Senate recommends brave driver who risked his life to avoid disaster in Delta for national honour

The Senate has recommended Ejiro Otarigho, the brave tanker driver, who drove a burning tanker from a danger zone to avert a tragic fire incident in Agbarho, Delta State for national honour.

The Senate who also resolved to honour the brave tanker driver, made this move at a plenary on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, following a motion moved by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege (APC, Delta Central) and co-sponsored by Senator James Manager (PDP, Delta South) and Senator Peter Nwaoboshi (APC, Delta North).

It would be recalled that Ejiro, in a rare act of bravery, had last week driven a burning tanker from a populated area to avert what could have been a tragic fire disaster.

The incident happened last Friday, June 10, 2022, when Ejiro drove the burning truck for 25 minutes from a densely populated area to Agbarho River where the tanker was completely razed by the inferno.

The act was captured by onlookers and had gone viral.

Rising under Order 45 and 52 of the Senate Standing Order 2021 (as amended), Senator Omo-Agege stressed that but for Ejiro’s courage, a major fire disaster which would have claimed several lives and property could have happened in his senatorial district.

The Delta Central lawmaker noted that Ejiro’s “extraordinary display of courage, reflex application of special driving skills, and huge risk to his own life, prevented a huge national tragedy and catastrophe by driving a burning tanker loaded with inflammable petroleum products from residential areas to safety so that thousands of our people may not die in an inferno that would also have consumed so much property in Agbarho, Delta State on Friday, June 10, 2022.”

The driver’s audacious act of heroism, he stressed, has saved the nation from national tragedy and mourning.

Accordingly, the Senate resolved to “invite Mr. Ejiro Otarigho to the chamber of the Senate for public commendation by the President of the Senate, Most Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Lawan.

“It recommended Mr. Ejiro Otarigho to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, for a befitting National Honour as Mr. President may deem fit for his extraordinary act of bravery, courage and skill that prevented the loss of human lives and property on a massive scale.”

President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, who presided over plenary, hailed the driver for risking his life to drive the burning truck out of residential area to save lives.

Meanwhile, the General Overseer of the Omega Power Ministry, Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere had earlier called the attention of President of Nigeria, President Muhammad Buhari, to consider Ejiro for a bravery award.

The cleric tweeted; “Dear president @MBuhari, please consider the young man in the photo for a national award, after watching the video of him driving a burning truck filled with diesel to safety away from a highly-populated area, please ensure he is treated like a hero for saving lives and properties.”

Plane Blown Off Runway At Stornoway Airport

A plane carrying 28 people has been blown off the runway at Stornoway airport in the Isle of Lewis. The Loganair Saab 340 aircraft had been trying to take-off for Glasgow when its wheel collapsed in heavy winds and it veered off the runway. Two passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries, according to the Scottish Ambulance Service. Stornoway Airport management issued a statement shortly after the incident saying: "Efforts to remove the aircraft from the runway are ongoing and investigations into the cause of the incident are under way. The General Officer Commanding 6th Division, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Maj-Gen. Johnson Olu Irefin has reportedly died of complications associated with the Coronavirus pandemic. The sudden death of Irefin, who assumed the command of the division in July 2020 replacing Maj.-Gen. Felix Agugo, was said to have thrown the army into mourning.
