Wearing hijab and niqob (veil) is like wearing mini-skirt or crazy jeans, says FUNAAB

Thee Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has said that Muslim women who wear hijab and niqob are not different from ladies who wear mini-skirt or men who wear crazy jeans, as all the dressing are immoral and unacceptable in the Federal University environment.

Thiss was announced by the University administration under the leadership through a circular and public billboard erected at the University school gate.

Religious tension has built up at the Federal University, following the announcement of the ban of use of Niqob (veil) by the Chief Imam of the University, Prof. Idris Ayinde, last week. Muslim faithfuls argued that the Muslims are entitled to dress according to their religious doctrine, citing that it has a fundamental right in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that the University has no right to deny them.

Further investigation by Intel Region revealed that the use of hijab and niqob is however considered immoral by the University Administration as it was announced in a billboard which was erected at the school gate.

According to the announcement, wearing crazy jeans, mini-skirt, sagging trousers, wearing hijab and niqob among others are all immoral and lousy dress style. The University thereafter stamped all the dress styles as “banned”.

“FUNAAB detests lousy/immoral dressing. The way you dress is the way you are addressed,” the announcement stated as seen in the image below,

Meanwhile, the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) of the FUNAAB has written a press release signed by the Ameer (leader), the General Secretary and the PRO of the organization confirming the information on the billboard, and condemning the action of the University administration.

According to the Muslims Students in the University, tagging hijab and niqob as immoral dressing is tantamount to calling the religion of Islam “Lousy and Immoral”.

“A lot of us have translated and have begun to spreading to the effect that the University meant their abrasive description is what a Muslim lady represents, and, since this is what the religion of Islam has legislated, that, even, the school means Islam is lousy and immoral. It is the dressing of Muslim ladies, which is an expression of religion in a full-fledged manner, is regarded as LOUSY/IMMORAL by the institution”, the statement reads.

The Muslim Students also affirmed that the ban of Niqob (veil) which was announced by the University Chief Imam, Prof. Idris Ayinde was a decision of the University Senate of which the Imam is also a member.

“These and several other cases have been a major struggle, year in, year out of the MSSN FUNAAB and the Muslim Community. At this juncture, we find it, as a doctrine of necessity to debunk the fake information making the rounds of social media, stating that our esteemed father, the university Imam, Professor Idris Ayinde “banned the use of Niqab”. We’d like to categorically state that the ban on the use of Niqab on campus, is a directive of the Senate of the University”, the statement said on Saturday.

The University Imam, Professor Idris Ayinde has faced heavy criticisms for pronouncing the ban of Niqab (veil) in FUNAAB. Several reactions has trailed his decision to agree with the University by banning one of what is widely accepted as one of the Islamic mode of dressing.

According to the Imam, Prof. Idris Ayinde, Muslims will not enter hell fire if they do not wear Niqob (veil), making the ban justified as it is not as fundamental as solat.

As at the time of filing this report, neither the Muslim Community of FUNAAB nor the FUNAAB University Administration has reacted to these revelations.
