South Korean court legalized adultery

FEBRUARY 26, 2015 BY ALJAZEERA Leave a Comment South Korea’s Constitutional Court has struck down a 60-year-old statute outlawing adultery under which violators faced up to two years in prison. The nine-member bench ruled by seven to two that the 1953 law was unconstitutional in a judgement handed down on Thursday. “Even if adultery should be condemned as immoral, state power should not intervene in individuals’ private lives,” said presiding justice Park Han-Chul. It was the fifth time the apex court had considered the constitutional legality of the legislation which had made South Korea one of the few non-Muslim countries to regard marital infidelity as a criminal act. In the past six years, close to 5,500 people have been formerly arraigned on adultery charges – including nearly 900 in 2014. But the numbers had been falling, with cases that end in prison terms increasingly rare. Whereas 216 people were jailed under the law in 2004, that figure had dropped to 42 by

Top 10 benefits of banana

Eating an apple each day can promote good health, but few people know that a banana each day can also keep the doctor away. The banana’s health benefits come from the many vitamins and nutrients that it contains. Some of the nutrients and compounds in bananas are carbohydrates, vitamins A, C, and B6, iron, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, zinc, sodium, potassium and natural sugars like sucrose, fructose and glucose. All of these make banana a superfood that is an integral part of a healthy daily regimen. Here are the top 10 health benefits of bananas; 1. Regulates Bowel Movements: Irregular bowel movements are an irritating health problem that can be easily solved with regular consumption of bananas. Bananas contain a good amount of insoluble fiber that travels through the digestive tract, sweeping up waste and producing bowel movements that are soft and easy to pass. However, eat bananas in moderation as consuming too much banana but too little water may contribute to

The spot where the first A. boisei was discovered in TanzaniaOThe spot where the first A. boisei was discovered in Tanzanialduvai Gorge or Oldupai Gorge in Tanzania is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world and has been instrumental in furthering the understanding of early human evolution. This site was occupied by Homo habilis approximately 1.9 million years ago, Paranthropus boisei 1.8 million years ago, and Homo erectus 1.2 million years ago. Homo sapiens is dated to have occupied the site 17,000 years ago. Olduvai Gorge is a steep-sided ravine in the Great Rift Valley that stretches through eastern Africa . It is in the eastern Serengeti Plains in Arusha Region , Tanzania and is about 48 km (30 mi) long. It is located 45 km (28 mi) from the Laetoli archaeological site. Woman 'cured by lucky DNA mutation'

A woman with a rare disease has been spontaneously cured in an event so improbable doctors say it is the medical equivalent of a lottery win. The woman in her 50s, who is not being named, was plagued by warts and infections as part of "WHIM syndrome" - caused by a defective immune system. But US doctors say a fluke DNA mutation, reported in the journal Cell, effectively cured her in her 30s. One doctor said the odds of it happening were "astronomically low". 'Pupils dilated' Patients with WHIM syndrome have a defect in a single section of their DNA. They are still able to make the cells that form the immune system, but these get stuck in the bone marrow where they are produced. The patients are left incredibly vulnerable to infection, particularly the human papillomavirus that leads to warts and an increased risk of cancer. The woman, who has asked doctors not to reveal her name, was the first identified case of WHIM syndrome more than 50 years ago.

Doctors store 1,600 hearts for study

Doctors in London have stored 1,600 beating human hearts in digital form on a computer. The aim is to develop new treatments by comparing the detailed information on the hearts and the patients' genes. It is the latest project to make use of advances in storing large amounts of information. The study is among a wave of new "big data" ventures that are transforming the way in which research is carried out. Scientists at the Medical Research Council's Clinical Sciences Centre at Hammersmith Hospital are scanning detailed 3D videos of the hearts of 1,600 patients and collecting genetic information from each volunteer. Dr Declan O'Regan, who is involved in the heart study, said that this new approach had the potential to reveal much more than normal clinical trials in which relatively small amounts of health information is collected from patients over the course of several years. He added: "There is a really complicated relationship between people's gen

'Copenhagen gunman' shot by police

Image
Police in Copenhagen say they have shot dead a man they believe was behind two deadly attacks in the Danish capital hours earlier. Police say they killed the man in the Norrebro district after he opened fire on them. It came after one person was killed and three police officers injured at a free speech debate in a cafe on Saturday. In the second attack, a Jewish man was killed and two police officers wounded near the city's main synagogue. Police say video surveillance suggested the same man carried out both attacks. They do not believe any other people were involved. "We assume that it's the same culprit behind both incidents, and we also assume that the culprit that was shot by the police task force... is the person behind both of these assassinations," Chief Police Inspector Torben Molgaard Jensen told a news conference. He said police would maintain a high presence in the city. Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said it was "a very sad morning"

Open letter to Lagosians

Image
Below are series of atrocities and massive looting of government funds and misappropriation of Lagos State resources committed by the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, and his god- father, the Jagabandit of Bourdillion Close, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Newspapers forgot to publish them: Fashola claims he spent the sum of N1.5Billion of un- appropriated funds, without approval in demolishing and planting grass at Oshodi. No newspaper reported this. Fashola’s god-father, Bola Tinubu, converted all the plots of land where Lagos Polytechnic was located at Ikosi, near the old toll gate. He chased away the Polytechnic in 2006 and went ahead to allocate the choice plots to himself. The headquarters of Television Continental (TVC) and Radio Continental, which is owned by him, is currently located there. He deprived the youths of Lagos of decent education because of his primitive desire to acquire every real estate that he can lay his hands on in Lagos. As to be ex

My dad's advice (Jokes)

When I got admission, my dad used to advise me not to engage in cultism and that I should stay away from trouble. So one day my daddy called me saying, "I'm just watching the news now and there is crises in your school, where are you?" I told him that I was in my room. He asked, "Did you lock your doors?" I said, "Yes". He said, "That's my son". So an hour later, my dad called and asked me what caused the problem. I told him that they increased the school fees from N27,000 to N127,000. My dad was now like, "Wait my son, I want you to tell me the truth. Where are you right now?" "I am in my room right now". I replied. My dad, really angry, said, "ARE YOU STUPID?! Will you get out of that room and join the riot!" Totally surprised, I reminded him, "Dad remember you told me to stay out of trouble". "Forget what I told you earlier"! He said, "Do what I'm telling you no

Saint Valentine

Image
Saint Valentine ( Latin: Valentinius ) is a widely recognized third- century Roman saint commemorated on February 14 and associated since the High Middle Ages with a tradition of courtly love. All that is reliably known of the saint commemorated on February 14 is his name and that he was martyred and buried at a cemetery on the Via Flaminia close to the Milvian bridge to the north of Rome on that day. It is uncertain whether St. Valentine is to be identified as one saint or the conflation of two saints of the same name. Several different martyrologies have been added to later hagiographies that are unreliable. Because so little is known of him, in 1969 the Roman Catholic Church removed his name from the General Roman Calendar , leaving his liturgical celebration to local calendars. The Roman Catholic Church continues to recognize him as a saint, listing him as such in the February 14 entry in the Roman Martyrology, and authorizing liturgical veneration of him on February

Runaway Dog Visits Sick Owner In Hospital

A woman battling cancer in hospital was overjoyed to receive an unexpected visit - from her runaway dog. Sissy dashed from home and wandered 20 blocks into the lobby of the Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The miniature Schnauzer belongs to Nancy Franck, 64, who has been at the facility for about two weeks following surgery. Her husband, Dale Franck, 66, had been looking after Sissy and her brother Barney at home. After the dog went missing, Mr Franck went searching for her everywhere. He got a call from the hospital when they found the family's number and house address on the dog's collar. Surveillance footage had captured the dog following her nose around the corridors. Mr Franck told ABC News: "She was on a mission that night to see her mom, but she couldn't find the right elevator to take." Hospital staff allowed Sissy to be taken up for a few minutes to see a delighted Mrs Franck. She told KCRG: "That was great just being abl

My attack (Joke)

Please thank God with me. They attacked me at about 8.30pm this evening. They came in2 my room while I was sleeping. I heard their sound as they moved across the room towards me; as I got up, I remembered the scripture that says 'He has not given us the spirit of fear...'. As one of them came at me to attack, I had no choice but to defend myself. I quickly struck! The second one also flew at me. I couldn't believe what was happening. My neighbours heard the chaotic sound that was emerging 4rm my room and were wondering what was wrong. I eventually hit the second one too; my hands were stained with blood. They lay still so I wondered if they were still alive, but when I looked at them on the floor, I found out one was still moving, I struck again & this time I hit harder in anger. That's how I killed the two giant mosquitoes attempting to suck my blood o... Have a lovely day....

HUSBAND FOR SALE

A store that sells husbands has just opened in Zimbabwe , where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates. You may visit the store ONLY ONCE! There are six floors and the attributes of the men increase as the shopper ascends the flights. There is, however, a catch .. You may choose any man from a particular floor, or you may choose to go up a floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building! So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband . On the first floor the sign on the door reads: Floor 1 - These men have jobs and love the Lord. The second floor sign reads: Floor 2 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, and love kids. The third floor sign reads: Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love the Lord, love kids, and are extremely good looking. "Wow," she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going. She goes to the fourth floor and sign reads: Floor 4 These men have jobs, love

STATEMENT ON THE TIMETABLE FOR 2015 GENERAL ELECTIONS BY THE CHAIRMAN, INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION (INEC), PROFESSOR ATTAHIRU M. JEGA, AT A PRESS CONFERENCE ON FEBRUARY 07th, 2015

Image
Ladies and Gentlemen, Introduction We invited you here today to make known the position of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the timetable for the 2015 general elections. Let me state from the outset that the Commission’s position was reached after carefully weighing the suggestions from briefings held with different stakeholders in the electoral process. The conduct of elections in a country like Nigeria is invariably a collective venture that involves not just the Election Management Body (EMB), but also a diverse range of stakeholders, notably security agencies, political parties and their candidates, voters, as well as interest groups, such as the civil society organizations and the media. To guarantee successful conduct of elections, there are things that are wholly the responsibility of the EMB. But there are other things critical for the success of elections, which fall outside the control of the EMB. In other words, while INEC must work har
