Kenya to effect e-visa from January 2021

Travellers from countries that require a visa to enter Kenya will from January 2021 be required to have an electronic visa (e-visa) before boarding a plane.

A statement from the department of immigration services seen by Standard Digital says 100 per cent e-visa will be effected from January 2021.

“All passengers from countries that require a visa to enter Kenya shall be required to obtain e-visa before boarding an aircraft,” says Alicent Odipo.

Kenya is also phasing out an old passport with an electronic passport.

Deadline for e-passport extended 

In February 2020, the Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, extended the deadline for migrating to the new e-passport to March 2021 to enable about 1.8 million Kenyans, mostly those in the diaspora, to get the new passports.

“We note with concern that 1.8 million Kenyans, mostly in the diaspora, are yet to replace their old passports with the East African Community biometric e-passport,” said Dr. Matiang’i.

The CS said the government was progressively phasing out the old generation passports as part of Kenya’s commitment to migrate to the e-passport following the International Civil Aviation Organisation specifications.

Nigerian Ambassador to US, Sylvanus Nsofor, Dies at 85

Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Sylvanus Adiewere Nsofor, is dead. He died Thursday night at 85. Though there is no official statement, competent sources confirmed his death. A retired justice of Nigeria’s Court of Appeal, Nsofor assumed office as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States on November 13, 2017. The envoy succeeded Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, who also died towards the end of his tenure as Nigeria’s ambassador to US. Born on March 17, 1935, in Oguta, Imo State, Nigeria, Nsofor graduated from London’s now-defunct Holborn College of Law in 1962. He also bagged an LL.M from the London School of Economics in 1964. The late envoy began teaching at Holborn College of Law in 1964 and later went into private practice the following year. He was appointed to the bench in Nigeria in 1977, and served as a judge of the Imo state High Court. Tinubu, Akande absence at APC NEC meeting

National leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is absent at the ongoing meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC meeting of the party in Abuja. Also, former interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande was also not present at the meeting. Both leaders of the party have apparently not hiden their dissatisfaction with  the national assembly leadership election held on June 9. The elections eventually plunged the party into crisis, eliciting verbal attacks and cold war amongst leaders of the party. Early this week, Akande wrote a controversial open letter where he alleged a conspiracy of the north against the south west, warning that the party may lose future elections if the crisis was not nipped in the bud. New disciplinary rules for UEFA Champions League

UEFA has announced their disciplinary rules where players on a yellow card will have their bookings voided following the quarterfinal stages of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. In a statement posted on UEFA’s official website, it read, “Following a recommendation by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee - in order to implement in UEFA club competitions a rule which is already in force in the UEFA European Football Championship - the Emergency Panel decided that, as of this season, all yellow cards from the beginning of the group stage will expire on completion of the quarter-finals.” "Bookings will therefore not be carried forward to the semi-finals." Reps direct nursing council to resume verification of nurses and midwives

The House of Representatives has asked the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to reopen its website and start verifying Nurses and Midwives based on the previous guidelines, not the revised guidelines dated February 7, 2023. This is to be done until an investigation by the House Committee on Health Institutions is concluded. Dr. Patrick Umoh raised a motion of urgent public importance emphasising the need to safeguard institutional integrity and address any misinterpretation of the House’s resolution by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. Umoh highlighted the House’s constitutional authority to enact laws for the peace, order, and good government of the Federation, including the power to enforce its resolutions and compel an executive agency to carry out a specific act in the public interest.
