The year 2014 was a challenging one for most citizens of our dear country. We remember our compatriots who were brutishly killed or maimed by evil terrorists in 2014. I remember with a still broken heart that 219 of our children from Chibok are yet missing, let down by a country that should protect them. I remember that, even as I speak, some of our towns and villages are yet under the occupation of Boko Haram. Yes, it is enough for you...

AGGRIEVED ex-militants, yesterday, held Delta State Deputy Governor, Professor Amos Utuama (SAN), hostage at Government House annex, Warri, over what they described as undue delay in the payment of their monthly allowances by the amnesty office. It will be recalled that the ex-militants, last week Monday, blocked the East-West Road for hours on same issue of their monthly allowances not being paid when due. Vanguard gathered that the ex-militants are demanding N1 million from each vehicle on the deputy governor’s convoy before they would let them go. North Korea Internet Service Restored After Over Nine-Hour Outage

The disruption came amid an escalating war of words between the United States and North Korea over a massive cyberattack on Sony Pictures. Though there has been no comment from the authorities in Pyongyang, US experts reported the restoration. Some analysts say the country’s web access was cut entirely for a time. Washington said that it would launch a proportional response to a cyber- attack on Sony Pictures, which made a comedy about North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un but U.S. officials said Washington was not involved. Officials would not comment on any US involvement in the current outages. CEO of U.S.-based CloudFlare which protects websites from web-based attacks, Matthew Prince, said the fact that North Korea’s Internet was back up “is pretty good evidence that the outage wasn’t caused by a state- sponsored attack, otherwise it’d likely still be down for the count”. Almost all of North Korea’s Internet links and tr...

Ebola death toll rises to 7 ,518

Image
The death toll from Ebola in the three West Africa countries hardest hit by the epidemic has risen to 7 ,518 out of 19,340 confirmed cases recorded there to date, the World Health Organization said on Monday . The latest data showed more than 140 new deaths since the last update , posted by the WHO three days earlier. The epidemic, centred in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, is the world ’s worst ever outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever, Reuters says. Sierra Leone accounts for the most cases, 8 ,939 , while Liberia has 7,830 and Guinea 2 ,571 . But Sierra Leone’ s death toll of 2 ,556 is much less than the 3 ,376 recorded in Liberia, leading some health experts to question the credibility of the figures reported by Freetown . Sierra Leone’s government last week launched a major operation to contain the epidemic , where the public health infrastructure is flimsy and poverty widespread as in other West African countries.
