NOA Frowns At Ogun Monarch for Naira Abuse at Public Event

A controversy has arisen involving an Ogun state monarch, Olu owode Kolawole Sowemimo, who is facing criticism for an incident captured in a viral video. In the footage, the monarch is seen interweaving N1000 notes into a lengthy rope of naira, and further, wrapping the currency around the neck of popular Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde at a party.

This action directly violates Section 21 (3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007, which prohibits the abuse and defacing of the naira during social events, with potential penalties of fines or imprisonment, or both.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has expressed its disapproval of the monarch’s conduct. In a statement released by the Director General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, on Tuesday, the NOA emphasized its mandate to safeguard and promote the integrity of national symbols. Issa-Onilu urged traditional rulers, including the implicated monarch, to recognize their responsibility in preserving these symbols, which are integral to the nation’s culture. He highlighted that respect for these symbols equates to respect for the country itself.

Issa-Onilu, while addressing the monarch’s actions, stressed that such abuse of the Naira notes carries legal consequences, including the possibility of imprisonment. The NOA head appealed to the monarch to refrain from such behavior and encouraged him to advocate against the abuse of the national currency.

Despite attempts to contact the monarch for clarification on the incident, his telephone number remained unreachable at the time of reporting.
