Cândido da Fonseca Galvão (Dom Obá II d'África) Cândido da Fonseca Galvão , also known as  Dom Obá II D'África  ( Lençóis , 1845-1890), was a  Brazilian   military officer  and  nobleman . A son of freed Africans, and a grandson of the  Obá Abiodun  of the  Oyo Empire , he held the title of  Omoba  among the  Yoruba people  of  West Africa . Galvão’s father, Benvindo, was freed on an unknown date in the first half of the nineteenth century. Upon his freedom, he sought to take advantage of the emerging Lençóis diamond rush in north eastern Brazil. Evidence suggests that he arrived around the year of 1845, although there are no birth certificates to corroborate, it is estimated his son Cândido da Fonseca Galvão was born shortly after.  Enlistment Campaign Galvão enlisted into the Brazilian military in 1865 as a freedman to fight for his home country in the upcoming war against Paraguay revolving around territorial disputes. BREAKING: Pinnick Impeached As CAF First Vice President

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Mr Amaju Pinnick, has been impeached as 1st Vice-President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). His removal took place on Thursday at CAF Executive Committee meeting,  after a well attended congress in Cairo Egypt. Pinnick was elevated to the position after the corruption case brought against former Ghana FA President and CAF First VP, Kwesi Nyantakyi. CAF executive committee on Wednesday agreed to allow FIFA Secretary General to take charge of the administration of CAF for a period of 6 months. The FIFA Secretary is expected to take over the running of CAF in spite of objection by some Executive Committee members. Official: CAF Announce Qualification Groups For AFCON 2021

Despite the 2019 edition still ongoing, the groups for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers have now been revealed, following Thursday's draw in Cairo. The his year's tournament is yet to be concluded with the final only taking place on Friday, but CAF have already determined the qualifiers for the next edition.   There are 12 groups consisting of four teams each. The top two sides from each group will qualify for the showpiece that will be held in Cameroon, who were initially supposed to host the 2019 edition.   Bafana Bafana, who were seeded in pot 2, were drawn alongside Ghana, Sudan and the winner of the preliminary round tie between Mauritius and Sao Tome Principe.   There are four matches in the preliminary round which includes Liberia v Chad, South Sudan v Seychelles, Mauritius v Sao Tome and Djibouti v Gambia.   Full draw:   Group A:  Mali, Guinea, Namibia, Liberia/Chad   Group B:  Burkina Faso, Uganda, Malawi, South Sudan/Seychelles   Group C : Ghan

Ogun sets up panel to probe rot in OOUTH

The Ogun State Government on Tuesday said it has instituted a panel of enquiry to look at the remote and immediate causes of the challenges facing the state-owned Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu. The nine-man committee is headed by the Chief Medical Director of Reddington Hospital, Dr. Yemi Onabowale. Other members of the committee include Dr. Folabi Ogunlesi, Dr. Dupe Oludipe, Dr. Kehinde Ololade, Alhaji Wasiu Lawal, Mr. Olumide Obube, Akinola Adekunle and Femi Akinwunmi. Deputy Director, Hospital Services in the State Ministry of Health Dr. Shokunbi Solomon will serve as the committee’s secretary. The committee is expected to assess the operational modalities of the hospital and ascertain its compliance with acceptable standard for medical training, research and development, according to Kunle Somorin, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun. Herdsmen stab 49-year-old farmer to death in Ogun

Residents of Adao community in Alabata area of Odeda Local government in Ogun state were thrown into confusion on Sunday when two suspected herdsmen reportedly stabbed a 49-year-old farmer, Rafiu Showemimo to death. It was gathered that the suspected herdsmen accosted the farmer and stabbed him in the neck on his way back home from the farm around 12 noon . It was gathered that a 76- year -old man had two weeks ago escaped death after suspected herdsmen macheted him in the head . The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi could not be reached as of the time of filing this report . However, the Olu of Alabata, Chief Sanusi Waheed who oversees the affected Adao community as one of his consenting communities, among others stressed the need for quick government’s intervention to abort the plans of the youths to foment trouble adding that the herders had crossed their boundaries. Nollywood actress, Kudirat Ogunro Nollywood actress, Kudirat Ogunro, says she will allow her husband to have a girlfriend after their marriage in order to have a settled home. Ogunro on Friday in Abuja said that men are, by nature, polygamous. She advised women to stop deceiving themselves by trying to wholly own their husbands. “I’m not a jealous lover. In fact, when I get married, my husband has to have a girlfriend. “That’s how my home can be settled and peaceful instead of him telling me ‘it’s only you baby’. No, I don’t believe in those words. I’m very serious. “Men are polygamous by nature; so don’t let us fool ourselves,” the actress said. Unfair Labour Treatment: SSANU, NASU Begin Nationwide Protest On Monday

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), have directed their members across the country to get ready for a nationwide protest starting on Monday 15th July, 2019 over some unfair labour treatment by the federal government. Listed among their grievances was the exclusion of the Associations members from the workings of the National University Pension Company (NUPENCO) solely operated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the preferential treatment extended to ASUU by the Federal Government as seen in the allocation of 80% of monies released leaving the non academic staff with 20 percent. According to a resolution reached after its National Executive Council meeting held on Friday in Abuja, the SSANU President, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, who told journalists that they rejected the 20 percent earned allowance allocated to the three non teaching unions, called on the Federal Government to immediately release the N30 b

Court releases six students, lecturer detained over Facebook post

Madonna University Six students and a lecturer of the Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, who have been in detention since February, for posting ‘offensive’ messages on  Facebook , have been released on bail. They were granted bail on Wednesday by the Federal High Court in Awka, presided over by Babatunde Quadri. The university, in a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, accused the students of tarnishing the reputation of the institution on the Internet. One of the Facebook posts read: “Good lecturers are scarce. Madonna University administration should be nice to our lecturers, or a good number of them will resign.” The students and lecturer were charged for offences bordering on cyber crimes. Following the development, security operatives took them to the Okija campus of the university from where they were first detained in a police cell and then later sent to the Awka Prison. A pipeline explosion in Ijegun has led to the death of at least two persons, and the destruction of several vehicles.  The incident stirred panic within the vicinity, leaving many to scamper for safety. Footages on social media capture the flames and people running helter-skelter in a bid to avoid being caught up in the flames. As of the time of filing this report, it was not certain if the casualty figures had increased, however, there are fears that many may be injured. More details into the incident are expected soon, as efforts are being made to restore calm within the area.

Atiku condemned Senator Elisha Abbo assault act

Kunle Afolayan’s movie “Mokalik” acquired by Netflix

Netflix, America streaming giant, has acquired award-winning director and producer Kunle Afolayan’s acclaimed movie ‘Mokalik.’ Afolayan disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday on the sideline of the French-Nigerian Cinema Days holding from July 2-3 at the Alliance Francaise, Ikoyi, Lagos. “I wish to inform you that Netflix has acquired “Mokalik” and some other of my films,” he said. However, Afolayan did not disclose the value paid for the acquisition, but added that the company has not announced when the films will be released on the platform. The acquisition represents Netflix’s ongoing aggressive interest for Africa motion picture sector in recent times where there is still relatively untapped source of talents and contents. IGP Orders Arrest Of Senator Abbo Who attacked Woman In Abuja Sex Toy Shop

Following the outrage generated by the video showing a senator of the Federal Republic, Elijah Abbo, assaulting a woman in a sex toy shop in Abuja, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the arrest of the senator and his orderly by an investigative team set up by the Police Force headquarters in Abuja.   Investigations are currently ongoing at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command into the alleged attack on a sales girl by a serving senator in Abuja. The news of the attack went viral after a video recorded by the Close Circuit Television (CCTV), installed in the shop was shared on the social media, an act which is said to have embarrassed the police authorities.
