WhatsApp users are being warned to brace themselves for some big changes next year.

The mobile phone chat application, which is used by 1.5 billion users every month, is set to incorporate advertisements in 2019 within its 'Status' section.

The move is being made in an attempt to monetise the world's most popular chatting app, which is owned by Facebook.

It will be a big first for WhatsApp, which has so far remained ad-free.

And people have been quick to express their dissatisfaction at the news, reported by the Sunday Express.

One Twitter user tweeted: "People don't want advertising on WhatsApp. They will find another platform to use when they get sick of adverts."

And another described the situation as "insane", adding: "WhatsApp will start showing ads on status updates in 2019. Insane I tell you.... I miss the old basic WhatsApp."

Co-founder Brian Acton revealed he left Facebook following a disagreement on how to make money from the application.

He claimed Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and other executives wanted to send targeted adverts to users.

Acton told Forbes: “Targeted advertising is what makes me unhappy.”

WhatsApp vice president Chris Daniels also spoke about the monetisation plans for the chat app.

He said: “We are going to be putting ads in 'Status'.

“That is going to be primary monetisation mode for the company as well as an opportunity for businesses to reach people on WhatsApp.”
