State Affairs: National ID
The Federal Government has announced plans for a brand-new National Identification card, and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has provided more details about the card.
In a statement released on Friday, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, Kayode Adegoke, shed some light on what we can expect from this new ID card:
“The card will be powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme powered by NIBSS.
Applicants for the card will have to request with their NIN through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks
”The card will be issued through the applicants’ respective banks in line with existing protocols with the issuance of the Debit/Credit cards.”
Get this: If what the government is proposing is anything to go by, the new National ID Card is not just your run-of-the-mill piece of plastic. Oh no, it's a single, convenient, and all-purpose wonder known as the General Multipurpose Card (GMPC). Government is saying get ready to say goodbye to cluttered wallets and hello to streamlined simplicity!
If things go well, this single card isn't just for show—it's got multiple use cases packed into its sleek design. We're talking about payments and financial transactions, access to government services, smooth sailing through travel checkpoints, and much more.
To make this a reality, NIMC is teaming up with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System to ensure that the payment and financial features of the card are top-notch. According to NIMC you can choose to pick up your new card at a designated center or have it delivered right to your doorstep for an extra cost.
If this works effectively, one can say that the future of identification is here. It will be a National ID Card of tomorrow, where convenience meets innovation, and the possibilities are endless.
We are waiting for action after talk.
