Tanzanian Ex-President who launched country's free market, dead at 98

Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, credited with ushering the East African nation into free market economics, has died at age 98, current President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on Thursday in a television broadcast.

Mwinyi succeeded Tanzania's first post-independence president, Julius Nyerere, who left office in 1985 after 22 years in power.

"On behalf of the government, I would like to convey my condolences to the family, relatives, friends and all Tanzanians for this loss," President Hassan said.

Mwinyi was credited with introducing free market policies and was in turn succeeded by the late Benjamin Mkapa in 1995.

President Hassan said Mwinyi died in hospital in Dar es Salaam where he was receiving treatment for lung cancer. He had been receiving treatment since November, Hassan said.

NAFDAC seals shop for allegedly selling unregistered aphrodisiacs in Zuba

Nafdac Building The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Thursday sealed a shop in Zuba, an outskirt of FCT, for allegedly selling unapproved aphrodisiacs to Nigerians. Some of the aphrodisiacs are: garin yansun, sabon mai-siket, ruwan jaraba, tunkude, fenugreek powder and al-khausara herbal syrup (man power). Bubuchiki Godiya, a member of the Federal Taskforce, Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC, said that “the agency received an Intel that Yunusa Adamu was manufacturing unregistered herbal preparation.” He Godiya said that the agency sent some of its team members to investigate and on arrival they found that there were many unregistered herbal drugs. He said that Adamu claimed to have purchased the herbal drugs from Kano and Kaduna markets. Objective The objective of the test was to measure the rate at which red blood cells settled at the bottom of a vertical tube over a specified period, helping to detect inflammation in the body. 2. Principle The test was based on the principle that red blood cells settle faster in the presence of increased plasma proteins, such as fibrinogen and immunoglobulins, which occur during inflammation. The distance the RBCs fell in a given time was measured and expressed in millimeters per hour (mm/hr). 3.
