South Africa President declares 27 December as a public holiday

South Africans will enjoy Tuesday, 27 December 2022, as a public holiday in lieu of Christmas Day falling on a Sunday.
 
This follows a declaration to this effect by President Cyril Ramaphosa in terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act (Act No 36 of 1994).
 
In terms of the 2022 annual calendar, Christmas Day, 25 December, falls on a Sunday.
 
Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act provides that "whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday”.
 
In this instance, the Monday following the 25 December 2022 is another public holiday, Day of Goodwill.
 
If the holiday of Sunday, 25 December were to be moved to Monday, 26 December, this would cancel the holiday of 26 December or cause the two holidays – which are part of 12 paid public holidays annually - to overlap.
 
This would mean workers would only have 11 paid public holidays in this year, while Section 5 of the Public Holidays Act provides that "... every employee shall be entitled to ... at least the number of public holidays as provided for in this Act."
 
In view of the unique circumstances around the 2022 calendar, and to uphold relevant labour law principles and practices, President Ramaphosa has declared Tuesday, 27 December, as a public holiday in lieu of Christmas Day.

NAFDAC seals shop for allegedly selling unregistered aphrodisiacs in Zuba

Nafdac Building The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Thursday sealed a shop in Zuba, an outskirt of FCT, for allegedly selling unapproved aphrodisiacs to Nigerians. Some of the aphrodisiacs are: garin yansun, sabon mai-siket, ruwan jaraba, tunkude, fenugreek powder and al-khausara herbal syrup (man power). Bubuchiki Godiya, a member of the Federal Taskforce, Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC, said that “the agency received an Intel that Yunusa Adamu was manufacturing unregistered herbal preparation.” He Godiya said that the agency sent some of its team members to investigate and on arrival they found that there were many unregistered herbal drugs. He said that Adamu claimed to have purchased the herbal drugs from Kano and Kaduna markets. ASUU strike: Details of FG meeting with union leaders emerge

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have agreed to resume talks next week to resolve the ongoing strike by university teachers. Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, told newsmen at the end of a closed-door meeting with the union in Abuja on Thursday that the talks had been fruitful. The meeting was called at the instance of the minister. “We will resume discussions by next week,’’ Ngige said. Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU President, also confirmed that the meeting would continue next week. “We have just started the discussion, we have really not gone too far, so what we have done today was to open the issues. By tomorrow we should meet and decide when we reschedule the meeting. “This means that the strike still continues,” Ogunyemi said. Unfair Labour Treatment: SSANU, NASU Begin Nationwide Protest On Monday

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU), have directed their members across the country to get ready for a nationwide protest starting on Monday 15th July, 2019 over some unfair labour treatment by the federal government. Listed among their grievances was the exclusion of the Associations members from the workings of the National University Pension Company (NUPENCO) solely operated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the preferential treatment extended to ASUU by the Federal Government as seen in the allocation of 80% of monies released leaving the non academic staff with 20 percent. AUTHORITIES YET TO RESPOND! Cholera kills 11 in Kano, hospitalised 47 others

No fewer than 11 people have died from a cholera outbreak in Kano State, reports have said. The cholera outbreak, Wuzup Naija gathered, has also hospitalised 47 others at Hanya Madaki, Halin Sarki, and Kunchi villages in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State. A youth leader in the affected area, Ubali Dawud Abubakar, who confirmed the outbreak, said the three villages had been battling the suspected cholera outbreak for over one week. He said that despite reports to the appropriate authorities, there had been no response. According to him, the remains of the last victim of the cholera outbreak were buried yesterday evening. Also, a parent of one of the victims, Musa Abdullahi, said about 47 persons had been treated at homes, as well as at some Patent medicine outfit, within the affected communities, while the villages hit by the suspected cholera had no hospitals or clinic.
