'Irish abortions happen; they just don't happen on Irish soil'

Image
(CNN) Julie O'Donnell was 29 weeks pregnant, on a flight from Dublin to Liverpool that was packed with rowdy holidaymakers, tears streaming down her face. When she got into a taxi at Liverpool Airport, the driver asked the distraught Irish woman where she was headed. "You have to say you're going to Liverpool Women's Hospital, and they know exactly why," O'Donnell said. "It's incredibly awkward." Abortion is illegal in Ireland -- except when there's a "real and substantial risk" to the mother's life -- and  3,000 women  like O'Donnell travel some 200 kilometers (124 miles) across the Irish Sea each year for a termination in the UK. Three weeks earlier, a routine scan revealed that her baby had anencephaly, a fatal defect in which part of the brain and skull isn't fully formed. The obstetrician gave O'Donnell two options. She could either continue with the pregnancy, which would probably result in a stillbirth,

Remembering the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 1918 influenza (flu) pandemic that swept the globe in what is still one of the deadliest disease outbreaks in recorded history. It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus, and the number of deaths was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide with about 675,000 occurring in the United States. The pandemic was so severe that from 1917 to 1918, life expectancy in the United States fell by about 12 years, to 36.6 years for men and 42.2 years for women. There were high death rates in previously healthy people, including those between the ages of 20 and 40 years old, which was unusual because flu typically hits the very young and the very old more than young adults. Zimbabwe’s eventual return to the Commonwealth, following a successful membership application, would be a momentous occasion, given our shared rich history,” she said. Zimbabwe joined the Commonwealth on its independence in 1980 and withdrew from the organisation in 2003. To re-join, Zimbabwe must demonstrate that it complies with the fundamental values set out in the Commonwealth Charter, including democracy and rule of law plus protection of human rights such as freedom of expression. *As Huddersfield celebrate precious point It took three weeks for Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany to finally get his hands on the Premier League trophy but, on a day of celebrations at the Etihad, a goalless draw may prove to have left Huddersfield Town as the big winners. A strong showing from the struggling visitors earned a valuable point which may be enough to keep them in the Premier League next season, an impressive achievement given their limited budget. They also kept at bay the bid by Pep Guardiola’s runaway champions to set new Premier League records for the most goals, points and wins in a season — all marks which could yet be claimed by City in the season’s final week in which they play Brighton and Southampton. But, after a delay while uninvited supporters were removed from the field, Guardiola was finally able to see his team presented with the trophy, the third major country in which he has managed a team to a title following successes in Spain and Germany wi
