Tobacco smoking can cause blindness

The Chief Medical Director, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Professor Etete Peters, has said that excessive smoking can result to blindness. Prof Etete at the world Tobacco Day celebration in Uyo Wednesday warned that inhaling nicotine from tobacco damages the optic nerves which supplies blood leading to gradual lose of sight. 

 

This year theme is ‘Tobacco-a threat to development.’ Speaking with journalists in his office the chief medical director said 31st day of May every has been set aside by the World Health Organisation as “NO Tobacco day.”

 

Etete who doubles as the president, Nigeria Thoracic Society (NTS) said the organization set aside the day as an action to stamp out tobacco consumption in the world. The medical expert called on the government to implement strong tobacco control measures considering the health danger it poses to humans. He advised further that it is better to abstain from cigarette smoking as living in the habit is difficult addictive.

 

He said apart from Tuberculosis and cancer of the lungs, any person who indulges in smoking is most to contact respiratory track disease which is a slow killer. Cardiovascular system and blood tracks are affected resulting in a cardiovascular accident (strokes). It can also cause abortion in women and other forms of abnormalities. According to him, nicotine is highly addictive, making it difficult to quit when you indulge in the habit.
