The biggest country in Africa that the United Kingdom colonized is Nigeria. The biggest country that the United Kingdom colonized in Asia is India (which then comprised the present Pakistan and Bangladesh). When the UK came into Nigeria and India, like all other countries they colonized, they brought along their technology, religion (Christianity), and culture: names, dressing, food, language, etc. Try as hard as the British did, India rejected the British religion, names, dressing, food, and even language, but they did not reject the British technology. Today, 80.5% of Indians are Hindus; 13.4% Muslims; 2.3% Christians; 1.9% Sikhs; 0.8% Buddhists, etc. Hindi is the official language of the government of India, but English is used extensively in business and administration and has the status of a “subsidiary official language.” It is rare to find an Indian with an English name or dressed in suit. On the other hand, Nigeria embraced, to a large extent, the British religion,...

What Blood Alcohol Concentration Entails – FRSC

Image
It is one of the commandments of driving, ‘ don’t drink and drive’ and if you really want to drink, then don’t drive. Alcohol in a human system can easily affect that person’s sense of judgment while driving and even cause accident that could be fatal. Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) explains what blood alcohol concentration is and how it is measured. Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is a measure of the amount of alcohol in a person’s bloodstream. BAC is commonly expressed in percentage terms. For instance, having a BAC of 0.08 percent means that a person has eight parts alcohol per 10,000 parts blood in the body. This is level of BAC in which a person is not allowed to drive any sort of motor vehicle by law. The FRSC generally specify BAC levels in terms of grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood (often abbreviated as grams per deciliter, or g/dL). BAC levels can be detected by breath, blood, or urine tests. © NTA

Difference Between Mammogram and Ultrasound.

What is a Mammogram? A mammogram is a specific type of x-ray picture that uses low dose x-rays on the breast. Mammograms are generally used to identify early signs of breast cancer, and are among the most successful methods in detecting early signs of breast cancer, often exploiting tumours that cannot be felt. When an individual receives a mammogram, they are required to stand in front of the x-ray machine, and their breast is placed on a clear plate, while another plate firmly presses the breast from above. Both plates will flatten the breast in order to hold it still, while the x-ray is taken. These steps are then repeated to obtain a side view of the breast. What is an Ultrasound? Ultrasounds, also referred to as sonograms, use high frequency sound waves to create an imagine of parts inside the body, such as kidneys, stomach, liver, heart, joints, or tendons. Ultrasounds use soundwaves instead of radiation, making them safer and more commonly used. Ultrasounds are also regularly...

LABORATORY IDENTIFICATION AND DIAGNOSIS OF MALARIA PARASITES.

MICROSCOPY Microscopy (morphologic analysis) continues to be the "gold standard" for malaria diagnosis. Parasites may be visualized on both thick and thin blood smears stained with Giemsa, Wright, or Wright-Giemsa stains. Giemsa is the preferred stain, as it allows for detection of certain morphologic features (e.g. Schüffner’s dots, Maurer’s clefts, etc.) that may not be seen with the other two. Ideally, the thick smears are used to detect the presence of parasites while the thin smears are used for species-level identification. Quantification may be done on both thick and thin smears. MOLECULAR DIAGNOSIS Morphologic characteristics of malaria parasites can determine a parasite species, however, microscopists may occasionally fail to differentiate between species in cases where morphologic characteristics overlap (especially Plasmodium vivax and P. ovale), as well as in cases where parasite morphology has been altered by drug treatment or improper storage of the sam...

How to enjoy sex after childbirth

Image
Sex after childbirth can be scary for many women; even though childbirth makes them to have all it takes to make their husbands want more sex on mere sighting them; talk of larger (milk-filled) breasts and pointed nipples. It is even for this reason that some men ‘compete for’ or ‘alternate’ the breasts with their new babies. Although sexual intercourse is not encouraged until six weeks after, for those who had normal delivery, to allow the body heal faster and avoid likely infections, some men have often described such women as more attractive. But those might not be enough to boost the confidence and preparedness of some women to resume sexual activities with their husbands, and the fears may not be misplaced after all. For those who had normal delivery, some tend to be apprehensive of what their partners would think of what has become of their body, largely because of their fatigued and ‘loose body.’ Coupled with exhaustion and other things that ...

Chickens forced to skip meals as cost of poultry feed rises by 100%

The recent increase in the cost of poultry feed in the country has been forcing farmers to ration food for their birds. Findings have shown that the cost of ingredients for the composition of poultry feeds, particularly maize, has increased by 100 per cent. For instance, a 100kg bag of maize, which used to cost about N6, 000 in April 2016, is now being sold for about N12, 000. Also, the cost of fish meal, another important ingredient in poultry feeds, has increased by 60 per cent. A kilogramme of fish meal that used to sell for N500 now costs about N800. However, the price of egg in the market has not enjoyed similar increase. Before the hike in the cost of poultry feed ingredients, a crate of eggs used to sell for N600. It is now being sold for between N650 and N700, depending on the egg size. This development has led farmers to be rationing food for their birds or mixing their feeds with lesser nutritious ingredients. This has consequently led to a drop in egg production as ma...
