With Brent crude, which gives Nigeria around 95 percent of its foreign earnings, falling to $30 a barrel for the first time in 12 years, the naira has dropped to record lows against the dollar on the parallel market amid dwindling FX reserves. The 2016 budget assumed an oil price of $38 per barrel, whereas lawmakers passed last year’s budget at $53 a barrel. “Mr president has written to the Senate and the

SSANU: Re-think the strike option

Image
The indefinite strike embarked upon by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) on December 24, 2015 has entered its fourth week. SSANU is asking the federal government to rescind its decision to remove names of universities’ staff school workers from its pay roll.  It would be recalled that government had earlier issued a circular to that effect to all vice chancellors of federal universities in the country. According to the National President of SSANU Comrade Samson Ugwoke, about 2,000 workers from universities staff schools are affected by the directive in the circular. SSANU had argued that the Union in 2009 entered in to an agreement with the federal government on the issue; adding that disengaging workers from the services of universities’ staff schools run contrary to terms of the agreement. Media reports indicate that the Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu had held a meeting with the national leadership of SSANU; pleading with the union to call off i

SSANU strike - Another face-off for TSA

Image
When the Federal Government mooted the idea of Treasury Single Account (TSA), not many envisaged that the scheme would land government in a fresh round of industrial impasse with universities' staff. Few months after the TSA scheme kicked off, however, government realised that universities have a huge wage bill, as it was discovered that previous administrations bankrolled the university-run Demonstration and Staff schools. The new government apparently considered the situation another form of 'leakage in the system' and decided to disengage the 'extra' staff. Fund for the schools have been captured in the TSA account and government is seeking a justification to continue with the arrangement. Government, therefore, terminated the appointment of about 2,000 teachers in Staff Schools late last year, which would take effect from this month. However, this development kick-started a fresh industrial action from December 24 by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian

In Japan is located the most frightening bridge in the world: judging by the pictures, it seems that those who have designed wanted to defy the force of gravity. We speak of the Ejima bridge, which combines the city of Sakaiminato and Matsue in Japan, the two cities are located on opposite sides of Lake Nakaumi. A bridge rather than a work road, seems part of an roller coaster in a theme park . The steepness is not only due to an optical effect, but it is real, as you can guess from the photographs that portray this. In details, the bridge have the maximum height of 44 meters. Its particular shape, of course, is not a random result , but is due to the fact that there is provided in the passage of ships. What is certain is that the images are almost scary, especially when the bridge is raised to pass along the boats: in that case, it is good to remember to stop his car with the handbrake, or the risk of a real disaster become very concrete. The reasons why the Ejima bridge is f

Report of missing budget "April fool stunt"

For Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of Nigeria House of Representatives, the belief that the hard and soft copies of the 2016 budget as presented by President Muhammadu Buhari to the National Assembly last December were missing, is a joke taken too far. Indeed, to Dogara, the report of the missing budget is nothing but “an incredible and award winning April fool stunt.” The Speaker said this on his twitter account in reaction to reports on Tuesday that Senators who resumed plenary after the yuletide holidays on Tuesday were informed by Senator Ali Ndume, the Senate Leader that the hard and soft copies of the budget were missing. The Senate Leader reportedly informed his colleagues of the development at a closed session. FG Eliminates Ghost Workers Using BVN

The Federal Ministry of Finance says it has successful completed a pilot project of using Bank Verification Number (BVN) details to fish out ghost workers, identity duplication and other irregular entries on the payroll. The Bank Verification Number is a number that uniquely identifies each bank’s customer for “know your customer” KYC purposes. The pilot project was initiated by federal government as a solution to the slow pace of progress being encountered in the enrollment of staff on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). A statement signed by the Director of Press in the ministry, Marshall Gundu, yesterday, said that the strategy of using BVN rather than requiring the physical presence of each member of staff has significantly simplified and accelerated the progress of the project and at a lower cost than anticipated. “We believe that the use of BVN rather than requiring physical presentation as a first line check on the integrity of our payroll is a c

Grapefruit juice and medicine may not mix

Grapefruit juice can be part of a healthful diet—most of the time. It has vitamin C and potassium—substances your body needs to work properly. But it isn’t good for you when it affects the way your medicines work. Grapefruit juice and fresh grapefruit can interfere with the action of some prescription drugs, as well as a few non-prescription drugs. This interaction can be dangerous, says Shiew Mei Huang, acting director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Clinical Pharmacology. With most drugs that interact with grapefruit juice, “the juice increases the absorption of the drug into the bloodstream,” she says. “When there is a higher concentration of a drug, you tend to have more adverse events.” For example, if you drink a lot of grapefruit juice while taking certain statin drugs to lower cholesterol, too much of the drug may stay in your body, increasing your risk for liver damage and muscle breakdown that can lead to kidney failure. Drinking grapefruit juice several

Biafra Passport Valid and Accepted In Many Countries - MASSOB

Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign States of Biafra, MASSOB, has said that Biafran passports being issued to its citizens are valid and accepted in various countries across the globe. It insisted that many citizens of Biafra had used the passport issued by the Biafran Directorate of Passport, and travelled overseas without hitches. In an interview with Vanguard, MASSOB’s National Director of Information, Sunny Okereafor, warned the federal government to stop seizing Biafra passport or threatening its holders. According to him, “I assure you the Biafran passport is valid. Except Nigeria, other countries of the world accept Biafran passport and allow our citizens to travel with it. In Europe, North and South America, Biafra passport is accepted. Nigeria is the only country that seizes Biafran passport. Go to neighbouring Ghana here, they will stamp the passport for you. Don’t be confused by the propaganda of the Nigerian government that there is nothing like Biafra passport.
