7 things to know about CBN’s credit card

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday launched the deployment of the National Domestic Card Scheme in a bid to unify payment in the country. With the deployment, Nigeria has now been enlisted into the growing list of countries like India, Turkey, China, and Brazil that have launched similar cards for domestic use. In this article,  Tribune Online  highlighted some of the key points to know about the CBN’s credit card: 1. The card designed in partnership with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBBS) seeks to unify payments in Nigeria and bring in the unbanked population. 2. It will reduce the cost and use of foreign exchange. 3. The card will make cards and payments more accessible and affordable for Nigerians. 4. It will be configured to address the unique ecosystem issues affecting Nigeria’s financial system. 5. Nigeria’s First Prof. Of Medicine, Ogunlesi, Dies At 99

The first Nigerian Professor of Medicine, Theophilus Ogunlesi has died at age of 99. Ogunlesi, an Emeritus Professor, who hailed from Sagamu area of Ogun State, died on late Thursday. Governor Dapo Abiodun has mourned the passing of the medical genius, describing his death as painful. Abiodun in a statement on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, noted that Professor Ogunlesi passed away when his vast experience in the field of Medicine was needed most, especially in the face of challenges militating against human health. While saying the late Emeritus Professor would be sorely missed in the state, Nigeria and the world at large, the governor said Ogun has indeed lost one of the finest medical experts the world would ever know. Abiodun added that the contributions of Professor Ogunlesi in the field of medicine would forever remain indelible and continue to benefit humankind.

Many shops destroyed as fire guts another popular markets in Ibadan

About 45 shops were affected in Araromi spare part market  Many shops have been reportedly destroyed as another popular market was razed by fire in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital. The fire incident at the Basorun Market was said to have started late Thursday night, January 19, 2023. An eyewitness account said that "the fire incidence was caused by a food vendor that forgot to put off her fire after closing of the day." On visiting the site, Symply Abefe discovered that eight (8) well stocked shops were severely affected by the inferno. Men of the fire service have put out the fire as traders scrambled to salvage what is left. This comes barely a week after goods worth millions of naira were destroyed as fire gutted Araromi spare part market in Ibadan. Abasi Otu reaffirmed as Obong of Calabar five days after sacking by supreme court.

Edidem Ekpo Abasi Otu has been reaffirmed as the Obong of Calabar barely a week after being sacked by the Supreme Court. The proclamation was done on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, by the Etubom’s Conclave of the Obong of Calabar palace. The supreme court had on January 13, 2023, ordered the Etubom’s Conclave to conduct a fresh selection process for the throne of the Obong of Calabar. Consequently, the conclave began the selection process. Etubom Ntiero Effiwat, chairman of Etubom Conclave, said the members are fully satisfied with the candidate’s qualifications and eligibility. He stated this while reading a document signed by 13 of the conclave members at the palace. “He is hereby on this day, Jan. 18, 2023, been proclaimed as successor to the throne of the Obong of Calabar,” NAN quoted Effiwat as saying. “The qualified Etuboms who fall under this group were communicated to and directed to produce and present their nominee to the Etubom’s Conclave by Jan. 18, 2023.

Popular Ibadan hotel shuts down, disengages staff

Scores of workers of Premier Hotel in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, have been disengaged Our correspondent learnt that Premier hotel, one of the edifices built during the defunct Western Region government, has shut down. The hotel is owned by Western Hotels Limited, a subsidiary of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, established by the defunct Western Region government. The hotel was deserted when our correspondent passed through Mokola hill. Group Managing Director of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, Adewale Raji, when contacted, confirmed the development. He added that the affected workers had been paid off. He maintained that the management of the hotel was conscious of the safety of the workers. He, however, debunked reports that the hotel has been sold. 32-year-old vulcaniser sentenced to death by hanging for robbing N57,000 in Lagos

A special offences court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos has sentenced Chidozie Onyinchiz, a 32-year-old vulcaniser, to death by hanging for robbing a nurse of N57,000. According to Mojisola Dada, the trial judge, on Tuesday, found Onyinchiz guilty of the three-count charge of conspiracy, armed robbery, and membership of an unlawful society. She said the convict’s attempt to wriggle out of the charges was futile as he earlier confessed to the police at Igando, Lagos, that his victim, Veronica Uwayzor sighted him, and they recognised each other at the scene of the incident. “The defendant had stated that the complainant pointed at him as one of the boys armed with a pair of scissors and forcefully snatched her bag containing N57,000 at Akesan Bus Stop. “The complainant had stated that neither the defendant nor his accomplice, Ediri Endurance, (still at large) wore masks which made it possible for her to easily recognise Onyinchiz few hours after the robbery. “The first statement of the defendan

World’s oldest known person Sister André dies at 118

The world’s oldest known person,  French  nun Sister André, has died at age 118 in the southern French city of Toulon, the city’s mayor Hubert Falco said on Wednesday. Born in the southern French town of Ales on Feb. 11, 1904, as Lucile Randon, Sister André was listed as the oldest person alive by the Gerontology Research Group in April 2022. The Frenchwoman worked as a home teacher in her youth and did not enter a religious community until she was in her early 40s. Most recently, Sister André was confined to a wheelchair, and for several years she could no longer see properly. She was an honorary citizen of Toulon, where she lived in a retirement home for several years. Falco praised her as incredibly modern and a nun with a big heart. According to the actor, the bus he boarded got burnt with the driver, and the elderly man who offered assistance in the process sustaining grave injury. Tension as DSS storms CBN’s headquarters, takes over Emefiele’s office

The Department of State Service (DSS) operatives have stormed the headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in an alleged attempt to arrest the apex bank’s governor Godwin Emefiele. Recall that, there have been reports of running battles between the DSS and the CBN governor over alleged financial terrorism. The secret police had sought a court order to arrest Emefiele who is currently out of the country for his annual leave that will lapse on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. A federal high court in Abuja had in December barred the DSS from inviting, arresting, or detaining the embattled Emefiele. On Monday afternoon, January 16, 2023, DSS operatives stormed the apex bank with about 20 vehicles with armed personnel. On arriving at the bank, the security operatives barred staff of the CBN from having access to Emefiele’s office. A query sent to the spokesperson of the DSS, Peter Afunanya, was yet to be responded to as of the time of writing this report. @ IntelRegion

Popular Nollywood actor, Femi Ogunrombi otherwise known as Papa Ajasco, is dead. The demise of the veteran comic actor was confirmed by a theatre practitioner, Husseini Shaibu, via his Twitter handle on Sunday, January 15, 2023. He wrote, “I have just been reliably informed that the ethnomusicologist, former Music Instructor with #NATIONALTROUPE and one time stand in for the ‘Papa Ajasco’ character on the popular #waleadenugaprod comic series ‘Papa Ajasco’ Mr. Femi Ogunrombi is dead. “I am told that the actor, singer, highlifist and trained nurse whom we fondly called ‘Uncle Ogurombo’ (not to his hearing though) passed on this evening (Saturday)” Ogunrombi was popular for his role in Wale Adenuga’s Comedy series, Papa Ajasco.
