We won’t back down, two years not too much to sacrifice, ASUU says as NLC takes protest to national assembly

The striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it is not going to back down until the Federal government acceded to its demands.

This was stated by the union president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, during the ongoing National Labour Congress (NLC) solidarity protest to make government resolved the lingering strike, in Abuja.

Recall, ASUU began its strike on February 14, 2022, before Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Educational Institutions (NASU) National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) joined.

The common issues the unions want the government to address before they could return to work are salaries and other entitlements.

The president said there is no going back until the government meet our demands. Adding that two years is not too much to sacrifice for the course.

Meanwhile, the NLC has moved its ongoing protest to the National Assembly, Abuja.

This has forced the Senate proceedings which started at about 11.00 a.m to went into a closed-door session.

The Wednesday’s protest was led by the NLC National President, Mr Ayuba Wabba.

Also, the students and their leadership are part of Wednesday’s protest. Other bodies who are present include, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, and the leadership of the National Youth Council.

The NLC started nationwide protest on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, over the prolonged industrial action by universities lecturers, fuel scarcity and high cost of living.
