Yellow Fever in Nigeria Continues to Spread

A Nigerian yellow fever outbreak detected early last month is worsening and causing many cases and deaths across five of the country’s 36 states.  The World Health Organization says 530 suspected cases, including 172 deaths, have been reported in Delta, Enugu, Benue and Ebonyi states in southern Nigeria and Bauchi in the north. 

Bringing this epidemic under control is difficult because Nigeria is facing    
many simultaneous outbreaks of other infectious diseases, including Lassa fever, vaccine-derived polio virus, measles, monkey pox and cholera.

World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jasarevic says the northeast of the country is also facing a humanitarian crisis largely caused by Boko Haram militants.

“The response is particularly challenging in a COVID-19 context because it requires an extraordinary amount of time and resources from the country’s health system," said Jasarevic. "...National and state authorities are currently focused on the COVID-19 pandemic response, limiting the human resources required to conduct investigations and response activities for the yellow fever outbreaks.”  
Nigeria has been battling successive yellow fever outbreaks since 2017.  The deadly disease is caused by a virus spread through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitos, which bite during the day.  Jasarevic says vaccination is of key importance in preventing outbreaks in high-risk countries.

“In Nigeria, these efforts are based on the introduction of the yellow fever vaccine into the routine immunization program," said Jasarevic. "This started in 2004, and also carrying preventive campaigns to rapidly increase protection.  But still the population, entire population of Nigeria has not been protected.”  

The World Health Organization urges those in areas reporting yellow fever to avoid daytime mosquito bites, keep their home surroundings clean, and clear mosquito breeding areas.  It also recommends that anyone visiting Nigeria who is at least 9 months old be vaccinated against yellow fever.

Nigerian Ambassador to US, Sylvanus Nsofor, Dies at 85

Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, Sylvanus Adiewere Nsofor, is dead. He died Thursday night at 85. Though there is no official statement, competent sources confirmed his death. A retired justice of Nigeria’s Court of Appeal, Nsofor assumed office as Nigeria’s ambassador to the United States on November 13, 2017. The envoy succeeded Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, who also died towards the end of his tenure as Nigeria’s ambassador to US. Born on March 17, 1935, in Oguta, Imo State, Nigeria, Nsofor graduated from London’s now-defunct Holborn College of Law in 1962. He also bagged an LL.M from the London School of Economics in 1964. The late envoy began teaching at Holborn College of Law in 1964 and later went into private practice the following year. He was appointed to the bench in Nigeria in 1977, and served as a judge of the Imo state High Court. New disciplinary rules for UEFA Champions League

UEFA has announced their disciplinary rules where players on a yellow card will have their bookings voided following the quarterfinal stages of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. In a statement posted on UEFA’s official website, it read, “Following a recommendation by the UEFA Club Competitions Committee - in order to implement in UEFA club competitions a rule which is already in force in the UEFA European Football Championship - the Emergency Panel decided that, as of this season, all yellow cards from the beginning of the group stage will expire on completion of the quarter-finals.” "Bookings will therefore not be carried forward to the semi-finals." Reps direct nursing council to resume verification of nurses and midwives

The House of Representatives has asked the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to reopen its website and start verifying Nurses and Midwives based on the previous guidelines, not the revised guidelines dated February 7, 2023. This is to be done until an investigation by the House Committee on Health Institutions is concluded. Dr. Patrick Umoh raised a motion of urgent public importance emphasising the need to safeguard institutional integrity and address any misinterpretation of the House’s resolution by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. Umoh highlighted the House’s constitutional authority to enact laws for the peace, order, and good government of the Federation, including the power to enforce its resolutions and compel an executive agency to carry out a specific act in the public interest. FG plans medical labs in federal tertiary institutions

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari(retd), on Monday, said the Federal Government had provided funds for the establishment of laboratories in all federal tertiary institutions and its research centres. Doctors remove 40 knives from man’s stomach

A man in India spent two months swallowing knives and had 40 of them surgically removed from his stomach, according to the doctor who led the operation. “He had a wild urge to consume metal. Even for us, the experienced surgeons, it was frightening,” Dr. Jatinder Malhotra told  CNN.  “We were so nervous… a small mistake could have taken the patient’s life. In my 20 years of practice, I have never seen anything like it,” he added. Malhotra said it took his team about two days to form a diagnosis and surgery plan and the operation lasted for five hours. He revealed that they found foldable knives, which when fully extended were about seven inches long. “The patient told us that he swallowed some knives folded and some unfolded. Nursing student that got pregnant for lecturer, gave birth to baby boy

A  former nursing student of the Ogun State College of Health Technology, Ilese Ijebu, Mosunmola, has been delivered of a baby boy.   The 28-year-old gave birth without any complication at the General Hospital, Epe, Lagos State, on Thursday.   PUNCH Metro had reported that Mosunmola and her lecturer, Dr Seyi Adu, had  a sexual intercourse in a hotel sometime in August 2016.   While Mosunmola claimed that she was coerced into the relationship by Adu after she failed his course, Adu said he was seduced by the his student whom he never loved or dated.   After lecturers, the head of Adu’s department and provost of the health college tried in vain to mediate in the matter, the case was taken before the ministry of justice.   An official in the ministry was said to have brokered a deal between the parties as Adu agreed to be paying Mosunmola a monthly allowance of N5,000.   The agreement reportedly broke down in March,2017 when Mosunmo...
