Asaba massacre

On October 7, 1967, one of the heinous massacres took place in Asaba, present-day Delta state. The Nigerian troops invaded Asaba and shot dead over 950 people. After 53 years that the people of Asaba in Delta State have been living in deep sorrow and anguish. They have been swimming in the ocean of misery and trauma as a result of the Nigeria-Biafra civil war. It was alleged that the massacre was carried out to teach the Asaba people a bitter lesson "for their sympathy for the Biafrans".  Barely three months into the war over the declaration of the Republic of Biafra, the federal troops descended on the small town on the west bank of the River Niger. Like possessed beings, the federal troops went on rampage, ransacking and vandalising homes, killing every "man" sighted and destroying homes, among other things. The killings started on 5th October and took another horrendous dimension on October 7, 1967. That day, hundreds of men, women and children came o

In the year 1891, the Ijebu tribe put a blockade on the trade route from the interior of Lagos. The Ijebus who were located east of Lagos on the Magbon river, did this to charge customs from Lagos which at that time was a crown colony of the British empire. The ruler of the Ijebu kingdom, the Ajuwale also shut down the Ejirin market which denied Lagos traders from making any trade up country The British government was obviously not too happy about all these and persuaded the Ajuwale to open the blockade. The traditional ruler refused to do so on several scenes occasions. Things would change in May 1891. Captain C.M Denton, a British acting governor took with him troops mostly made up who were from the North but ran to the South and joined the British army, to meet with the Ajuwale. The plan was to convince him to open the blockade so that there could be free passage of goods to Lagos. After much persuasion, the Ajuwale agreed in January 1892. The kingdom of Ijebu would rece

Sowore, Falz, Runtown, Others Call For Nationwide Protest Against SARS

Nigerians are calling for nationwide protests after the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, stopped officers attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and other tactical squads from routine patrol as well as stop-and-search. The  ban  follows public outcry over extra-judicial killings of young people in the country by officers, who label them as criminals without following due process. Some Nigerians on Twitter, however, insisted that the ban was a ruse by the Nigeria Police Force to quell public outrage, which escalated on Sunday. Folarin Falana, popular musician and son of rights lawyer, Femi Falana, declared in a series of tweets that he was ready to protest in the streets until the killings end.  Makes me sick to my stomach that till now, we are still waiting for a single word from our so called “president” on this SARS menace. — Bop Daddy (@falzthebahdguy)   October 4, 2020 By farrrrr the MOST insensitive government ever in our history.
