Medical Laboratory Technicians fumes over MLSCN circular

The Medical Laboratory Technicians had registered there dissatisfaction over the circular released by their regulatory body, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), dated 27th April, 2023, in what is seen as a reply to their letter following the Stoppage of Direct Entry For Medical Laboratory Technician By Joint Admission and Matriculated Board (JAMB).

In the Circular that was personally signed by the Council Registrar/CEO, Dr Tosan Erhabor, He outlined their past efforts to grant twenty (20) slots to Medical Laboratory Technicians in all Nigeria university for Direct Entry, and he added that there are efforts to intensify other directions by engaging relevant authority with a view to resolve the worrisome development that negates the council's intention for the professional advancement of Medical Laboratory Technicians.

The two (2) paged - six (6) paragraph circular did not mention if there is any steps make by the council in the conversion of Medical Laboratory Technician certificate from Professional to Academic, following a circular from the office of the Head of Service.

In addition, Medical Laboratory Technicians bring it to their council's attention that: 

1. Not all government (Federal and State) universities will honour MLSCN 2020 formulated policy on alloted 20 Direct Entry slot for Medical Laboratory Technician for example how many public (State or Federal) University admitted MLT for DE into BMLS.

2.  MLT/MLA certificate doesn't get approved authorised evaluation, academics accreditation from authorised bodies (NBTE, FMOE e.t.c

3. MLT/MLA is a professional certificate issue by professional regulator (MLSCN) not authorised by relevant authorities.

4. MLT/MLA certificate is not genuined, approved, authorised, evaluated academic certificates like National Registered Nurse and National Registered Midwife (NRN/NRM).

Finally, the Medical Laboratory Technicians pleads on their council to please consider those that can not go back to school again to liase with concerned authority and agency to convert their certificate from Professional to Academic.

Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT) are the health workers that collect and process Blood, Urine, and other body fluids in the hospital, clinics, health centres and private medical laboratory centres for diagnosis and treatment purposes.
