Chinese police beat, arrest BBC journalist covering Covid protests

The BBC has said one of its journalists in China was arrested and beaten by police while covering protests on Sunday against the country’s zero-Covid policy.

Hundreds of people took to the streets in China’s major cities on Sunday in a rare outpouring of public anger against the state.

“The BBC is extremely concerned about the treatment of our journalist, Ed Lawrence, who was arrested and handcuffed while covering the protests in Shanghai,” the broadcaster said in a statement.

Lawrence, working in the country as an accredited journalist, was detained for several hours, during which time he was beaten and kicked by police, according to the BBC. He was later released.

Lawrence tweeted on Monday to thank his followers, adding he believed “at least one local national was arrested after trying to stop the police from beating me.”

The reporter later returned to the scene of the protest, according to videos he posted on his Twitter page.

“It is very worrying that one of our journalists was attacked in this way whilst carrying out his duties,” the BBC said.

“We have had no official explanation or apology from the Chinese authorities, beyond a claim by the officials who later released him that they had arrested him for his own good in case he caught Covid from the crowd,” the statement added.

“We do not consider this a credible explanation.”

China’s foreign ministry said Monday that Lawrence had not identified himself as a journalist.

“Based on what we learned from relevant Shanghai authorities, he did not identify himself as a journalist and didn’t voluntarily present his press credentials,” foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, telling international media to “follow Chinese laws and regulations while in China.”

NAFDAC seals shop for allegedly selling unregistered aphrodisiacs in Zuba

Nafdac Building The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Thursday sealed a shop in Zuba, an outskirt of FCT, for allegedly selling unapproved aphrodisiacs to Nigerians. Some of the aphrodisiacs are: garin yansun, sabon mai-siket, ruwan jaraba, tunkude, fenugreek powder and al-khausara herbal syrup (man power). Bubuchiki Godiya, a member of the Federal Taskforce, Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC, said that “the agency received an Intel that Yunusa Adamu was manufacturing unregistered herbal preparation.” He Godiya said that the agency sent some of its team members to investigate and on arrival they found that there were many unregistered herbal drugs. ASUU strike: Details of FG meeting with union leaders emerge

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have agreed to resume talks next week to resolve the ongoing strike by university teachers. Dr Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, told newsmen at the end of a closed-door meeting with the union in Abuja on Thursday that the talks had been fruitful. The meeting was called at the instance of the minister. “We will resume discussions by next week,’’ Ngige said. Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU President, also confirmed that the meeting would continue next week. “We have just started the discussion, we have really not gone too far, so what we have done today was to open the issues. By tomorrow we should meet and decide when we reschedule the meeting. “This means that the strike still continues,” Ogunyemi said. AUTHORITIES YET TO RESPOND! Cholera kills 11 in Kano, hospitalised 47 others

No fewer than 11 people have died from a cholera outbreak in Kano State, reports have said. The cholera outbreak, Wuzup Naija gathered, has also hospitalised 47 others at Hanya Madaki, Halin Sarki, and Kunchi villages in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State. A youth leader in the affected area, Ubali Dawud Abubakar, who confirmed the outbreak, said the three villages had been battling the suspected cholera outbreak for over one week. He said that despite reports to the appropriate authorities, there had been no response. According to him, the remains of the last victim of the cholera outbreak were buried yesterday evening.
