Health minister tests positive after getting COVID-19 vaccine trial dose

Health Minister of the northern Indian state of Haryana, Anil Vij, who was given a trial dose of a Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine in November, tested positive for the virus on Saturday.

Vij, who is the holding charge of several ministries including health, said on Twitter that he had contracted the virus.

He urged people, who came in contact with him in recent days to undergo a test.

“I have been tested COVID-19 positive.

“I am admitted in civil hospital Ambala cantonment.

“All those who have come in close contact to me are advised to get themselves tested for COVID-19,” Vij wrote.

In November, 67-year-old Vij was administered a trial dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as part of the third phase trial of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin.

He had earlier announced that he would be the first volunteer in his state for the vaccine.

Haryana state has so far reported 240,841 cases of COVID-19 and 2,539 related deaths.

On Saturday morning, the federal health ministry said the number of COVID-19 cases in the country has reached 9,608,211 and the death toll has risen to 139,700.

India is in the grip of the ongoing COVID-19 and globally it is the second worst-hit country by the pandemic. (Xinhua/NAN)

The Federal Capital Territory Vehicle Inspection Office (FCT VIO) says its arrest of motorists over faded vehicle number plates is not to extort them but ensure compliance with traffic rules. The FCT VIO Spokesperson, Mr Kalu Emetu, made the clarification following complaints by motorists over the issue. Some of the motorists said they were made to pay heavy fine of up to N20,000 and directed to procure a new number plate for no fault of theirs. The motorists said that the VIO should blame the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for the substandard number plates which fade easily, instead of heaping the blame entirely on them. Emetu, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja, that all vehicle number plates must be visible from at least from 50 meters, otherwise it was an offence to use it. A pro-democracy group, the Voters’ Assembly (VOTAS) has condemned Tuesday’s impeachment of Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako. The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Mashood Erubami, Wednesday, said Nyako’s impeachment set a new template for vindictive politics in Nigeria, describing it as an ominous sign that the 2015 election will be racked with possible catastrophes. MEMBERS of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) yesterday rallied support for the 23 workers sacked by the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) in Ogun State. The association protested the sack by disrupting movement into the campus while they accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of betrayal by releasing the names of the whistleblowers to the management of FUNAAB. EFCC Arraigns Man For N16m Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 arraigned one Bashir Salihu before Justice M. Talba of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Gudu, Abuja on a 2-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and issuance of dud cheque. Salihu allegedly obtained the sum of sixteen million naira (N16m) as loan from one Ramatu A Isiaq for the construction of perimeter fence of Niger Delta Science, Technology and Bio Industrial Park in Sagbama, Bayelsa State. The accused is said to have promised to repay the loan with interest within three months but failed to do so. All efforts to recover the money proved futile.
