Diet Rapidly Influences Sperm Quality

Image
While it's known that environmental factors influence the quality of sperm over time, researchers have found that diet can have a rapid impact on sperm. The study was conducted with a small group of fifteen healthy volunteers that were given a regular diet followed by one high in sugar. The findings, by scientists at Linköping University, have been reported in PLOS Biology . Image credit: Pixabay "We see that diet influences the motility of the sperm, and we can link the changes to specific molecules in them. Our study has revealed rapid effects that are noticeable after one to two weeks," said the research leader Anita Öst, senior lecturer in the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine at Linköping University. Previous work has shown that in a fruit fly model, males that were given more sugar ended up producing more offspring than males not given sugar. This phenomenon may be affected by molecules called tsRNA (tRNA-derived small RNA). Once tho...

Teenage killers: End of road for young kidnappers on rampage in Benin

When 46-year-old Okunbor Oghogho found himself surrounded by five teenagers on the night of November 21, 2019, the worst he could think of was that he was about to be robbed of his valuables. On that score, he was correct, as they soon took his Samsung phone and the N5, 000 cash on him. However, he didn’t know how wrong he was. By the time the night was over, the teenage gang had committed worse crime. They had kidnapped him, used his UBA ATM card to withdraw N215, 000 from his account and after noting a balance of N1.6m, decided to kill him. He was stabbed to death and his body disposed in the river at Upper Mission Extension axis of Benin City. They took his car with them.  This grave crime was committed under the cover of darkness and it remained a secret for a few days, as the police did not get wind of the crime until three days later when the victim’s wife reported her husband missing to the Anti-kidnapping Squad. Subsequent operation by the unit, led by Superintendent of Pol...

Rochas Okorocha, Godwin Obaseki, Ibikunle Amosun and other APC leaders fighting to remove Oshiomhole

Image
Despite recording key electoral victories, especially in Kogi state where the performance (or lack of it) of Yahaya Bello made defeat a likely prospect and the rare victory in Bayelsa state for the first time since the return to democracy in 1999, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is locked in an intense and frenetic battle to keep his job as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress. There has been multiple attempts – subtle and public - to mobilize important stakeholders and force Oshiomhole through the exit but the National Chairman has survived thus far due to his backing by the likes of Bola Tinubu, APC’s National Leader, according to reports. If Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is to overcome and continue as the official leader of the ruling party in the coming year, here are some of the leaders in the party he may have to pacify or decimate as they are reportedly leading the charge of the camp determined to kick out Oshiomhole. Image
Soon the best place to find a blood donor may be on your phone, thanks to JDI’s JBlood Match. Photo source: Jela’s Development Initiatives (JDI) Is there an alternative to blood for humans? The answer is no. One of the most vital requirements for a woman experiencing severe bleeding during childbirth is a blood transfusion. It is also the most essential need of a child suffering from severe anaemia due to chronic malnutrition or malaria. Accident victims, organ transplant patients and others often require blood transfusions to keep them alive, and blood transfusion is only possible with the availability of safe blood at the point of need. It is an open secret that in Nigeria, blood is not always available at the point of need, and sometimes has to be sourced by relatives of individuals who need it. Many gaps exist in the blood supply chain, from inadequate infrastructure for storage, to the high costs of screening. The most challenging gap is findin...
