Ladi Kwali

Ladi Kwali you know her check the back of your 20naira notes to see the only female on Nigeria currency. She was born in the small village of Kwali, present Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, in 1925 (Other historians indicate her date of birth is actually 1920). She grew up in a family that kept up with the folkloric female tradition of pottery making. Mallam Mekaniki Kyebese, Ladi Kwali's younger brother, stated: “even in the early years of pottery making, Ladi Kwali excelled in the crafts and her wares were often sold even before they were taken to the markets”. During her first professional years, the traditional cultural environment moved her to produced pottery pieces that were influenced by the Gbagyi tradition and accentuated with personal idioms. A man who confessed to murdering the traditional ruler of Odo Oro Ekiti, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin has revealed why he did it. Kidnapper Under Influence Of ‘Tramadol’ Dozes Off In Victim's Compound

The suspect has been asleep for more than 24 hours after his arrest, while a 400mg tablet of Tramadol was found in his pocket. The kidnapper after being arrested by policemen Police in Ondo State have arrested a suspected kidnapper who slept off while planning to abduct a renowned pharmacist in the state. The suspect, whose real name was yet unknown, was said to have attempted to abduct the owner of the Chinery Pharmacy in Owo, when he was arrested. Pepsi CEO, Indra Nooyi, steps down after 12 years

Pepsico announced on Monday that Indra Nooyi will step down as the chief executive officer, on October 3, ending a 24-year run with the organisation, half of which she spent as the company’s chief executive. Nooyi will stay on as Pepsico chairman until early 2019, the company said, in order to ensure a smooth transition to her successor, Pepsico president Ramon Laguarta, reports Forbes. “Leading PepsiCo has truly been the honour of my lifetime, and I’m incredibly proud of all we have done over the past 12 years to advance the interests not only of shareholders, but all our stakeholders in the communities we serve. The convention, which began on Thursday with a Ministers Conference, formally starts today and runs till Sunday. China develops new diagnostic method for coronary heart disease

Developed by Shanghai Jiaotong University, the new technology is called Quantitative Flow Ratio (QFR) measurement system and has been approved by the China Food and Drug Administration. A coronary angiography is the most conventional diagnostic method of coronary heart disease in China. However, the internationally recognised high-precision assessment technology is expensive and requires complex surgical procedures, which have not been popularised in China. Based on the computational analysis of an X-ray coronary angiography image, the system obtains the QFR, which can help identify coronary heart disease. 9 corps members drown in river while swimming

9 corps members were drowned in River Mayo Selbe in Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba state. Daily Trust gathered that 22 corps members got drowned in the river while swimming on Saturday. It was further gathered that out of them, 9 died while 13 were rescued by the villagers. The Police Public Relation Officer, Taraba state command, ASP David Misal, confirmed the incident. He said 9 out of 22 corps members died. ASP Misal further stated that 7 corpses were recovered and the search for the remaining 2 corpses continued. "Information at our disposal reveals that 22 Youth Corps members serving in the state were on a picnic party in River Mayo-Selbe in Gashaka LGA on Saturday when the incident happened." No fewer than 11 people have died from a cholera outbreak in Kano State, reports have said. The cholera outbreak, Wuzup Naija gathered, has also hospitalised 47 others at Hanya Madaki, Halin Sarki, and Kunchi villages in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State. A youth leader in the affected area, Ubali Dawud Abubakar, who confirmed the outbreak, said the three villages had been battling the suspected cholera outbreak for over one week. He said that despite reports to the appropriate authorities, there had been no response. According to him, the remains of the last victim of the cholera outbreak were buried yesterday evening. Also, a parent of one of the victims, Musa Abdullahi, said about 47 persons had been treated at homes, as well as at some Patent medicine outfit, within the affected communities, while the villages hit by the suspected cholera had no hospitals or clinic. The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said God had not revealed to him who will succeed him as the church’s G.O. Congo to start using Ebola vaccine as early as Monday –Health minister

Democratic Republic of Congo will start using an Ebola vaccine as early as Monday to counter a new flare-up in the heavily populated eastern part of the Central African country, which emerged just as an earlier outbreak was being pronounced over. Four people have tested positive for Ebola in and around Mangina, a town some 100 km (60 miles) from the Ugandan border, and 20 others have died of similar hemorrhagic fever symptoms without having been tested for the disease. The WHO says the new outbreak presents a high regional risk, given the proximity to neighboring countries. It was discovered in July, just as health officials were declaring the end of another outbreak 2,500 km away in the western part of the country, which killed 33 people since it emerged in April. The earlier outbreak was officially pronounced over last week. Officials have not yet been able to determine if the two outbreaks are linked. Reseachers said on Friday that heavy drinking or long-term abstinence could both contribute to increased risk of developing dementia. Researchers from French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) and UCL investigated the association between midlife alcohol consumption and risk of dementia into early old age. Their findings are based on 9,087 British civil servants aged between 35 and 55 in 1985 who were taking part in the Whitehall II Study, which is looking at the impact of social, behavioural and biological factors on long-term health. Participants were assessed at regular intervals between 1985 and 1993 on their alcohol consumption and alcohol dependence. Alcohol consumption trajectories between 1985 and 2004 were also used to examine the association of long-term alcohol consumption and risk of dementia from midlife to early old age. According to the study, of the 9,087 participants, 397 cases of dementia were recorded over an average follow-up period of 23

Kidnappers attack Akwa Ibom judge after death sentence

A judge of the Akwa Ibom State High Court, Justice Okon Okon, escaped death on Tuesday as some convicts attacked him on the court premises in Uyo for sentencing them to death. It was learnt that as soon as the presiding judge pronounced the death sentence on the kidnappers, the convicts started to abuse him. They also threatened to kill the Akwa Ibom State Government’s prosecution team. The criminals later went berserk, destroying the window of the courtroom and causing pandemonium along Ikot Ekpene Road, where the court is located. A source said, “The situation became messy, as litigants and lawyers in other courts ran helter-skelter for dear lives. “For about an hour, the kidnappers refused to leave the courtroom. An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Tuesday, remanded a 47-year-old man, Premie Imafidon, for allegedly slapping his wife to death. Imafidon is facing a one-count charge of murder. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Maria Dauda, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 15 around 7.00 pm at No. 25, Apata St., Agege, Lagos. She said that the accused slapped his wife, Hope who was 42, which resulted in her death. The offence contravened Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 224 stipulates death sentence for murder. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Ajibade, remanded Imafidon in Ikoyi Prisons and ordered that the case file be sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice. Ajibade adjourned the case until Sept. 3

Women in South Africa are marching against gender violence with #TotalShutdown protest

Women in various parts of South Africa have taken to the streets to protest the increasing levels of gender-based violence in the country. As South Africa celebrates Women's Month throughout August and National Women's Day on August 9, hundreds of women have decided to use the occasion to raise awareness of violence against women and children under the 'Total Shutdown' banner. South Africa's femicide rate is  five times more than the global rate . According to  a report by Africa Check , the global figure for femicide in 2015 was 2.4 per 100,000 women, while South Africa's rate was four times higher at 9.6 per 100,000 women. Dubbed an 'intersectional women's march' and organized by  WomenProtestSA , the march calls for women to take to the streets under the rallying cry: "My body, not your crime scene."
