He said he sustained various degrees of injuries from the assault. The cadets that did this are yet to be punished...

Zika has been sexually transmitted in Texas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. It is the first known case of the virus being locally acquired in the continental United States in the current outbreak. The case, announced by Dallas County health officials, involved a patient who had sex with someone who had recently returned from Venezuela infected with the mosquito-borne virus. In a statement to CNN, the CDC said it confirmed the test results showing Zika present in the blood of a “nontraveler in the continental United States.” They stressed that there was no risk to a developing fetus in this instance. Based on that, the CDC says it will soon provide guidance on sexual transmission, with a “focus on the male sexual partners of women who are or who may be pregnant.” Earlier Tuesday, CDC Director Tom Frieden told CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Sanjay Gupta: “There have been isolated cases of spread through blood transfusion or sexual contact and that’s n

Lagos demolished Baba Ijebu's building

Image
As part of the on-going exercise to curb the spate of building collapse, Lagos State Government, yesterday, demolished a four storey-building owned by the founder of the popular Premier Lotto, popularly known as “Baba Ijebu,” Sir Kensington Adebutu, in order to avert possible loss of lives and property in the area. The building located at No 6, Campbell Street, Lagos Island was formerly used as party secretariat by the Action Congress, (now All progressives Congress) and law firms. But the building was vacated 10 years ago when the residents discovered crack wall on the building. It was learned that Adebutu bought the building few years ago but was still deliberating with his staff on how to judiciously use the building. Vanguard gathered that the building was sealed by the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, twice to allow the owner embark on Structural Stability Test, SST, before embarking on manual demolition exercise which commenced on  October 16th, 2015 and December 2

CCT: Supreme court decides Saraki's fate Friday

Image
Can the Chairman and a member of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) legally conduct proceedings where the Constitution says it must be constituted by two members and a Chairman? Was the CCT wrong to have assumed jurisdiction over the trial of Senate President, Bukola Saraki, charged with false asset declaration, without one of its members? These are among the issues to be decided Friday by the Supreme Court as it delivers judgment in the appeal brought before it by Saraki. Saraki’s appeal is against the October 30, 2015 judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja which dismissed an earlier appeal by Saraki with which he challenged the jurisdiction of the CCT to try him for alleged false declaration of assets. Saraki was arraigned before the CCT on September 22 last year on a 13-count charge after much resistance for the Senate President, prompting the tribunal to issue a bench warrant for his arrest. Although he pleaded not guilty to the charge, he subsequently challenged the power of

Ipaye said this during a press conference held at Oke Mosan in Abeokuta, the state capital. He identified the index case in the state as a 28-year-old lady, “discovered on Wednesday February 3 at 8:10pm.” Ipaye said the victim had travelled to Ebonyi for a burial and returned to Ogun on January 15, and later started manifesting the symptoms of the viral disease. He said, “The victim had accessed  treatment at Ruby Medical Centre, Ota . She was said to have been moved another hospital, Central Specialist Hospital, Ota. It was the management of the Central Specialist Hospital that called the state Ministry of Health.” “We moved in immediately and took her in. We have shut the two health facilities for decontamination.” Ipaye said the victim had been transferred to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital,  one of the isolation centres for the

The mystery of a deep-sea creature that resembles a discarded purple sock has been solved, scientists report.

The animal, called Xenoturbella, is so bizarre that for 60 years researchers could not work out what it was - or where it fitted into the family tree. But the discovery of four new species in the Pacific has enabled scientists to conclude that this animal belongs to one of the earliest branches of life. The study is published in the journal Nature. Lead researcher Prof Greg Rouse, from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in the US, said: "Our nickname for them was purple socks. Advertisement "So if you think of a sock that you have taken off and thrown on the floor - they literally look like that. "Or a deflated balloon." Xenoturbella was first described in 1949. The ocean oddity has no eyes, no brain and no gut. Just a small gaping mouth from which food goes in - and then waste comes out. Only one species was known, and it left scientists scratching their heads. Early genetic tests mistakenly placed the marine "sock" as a mollusc. "But

Presidency lists Buhari's achievement in the first 7 month

The Presidency has countered claims in some quarters that President Muhammadu Buhari has not achieved anything in the seven months of his administration. The Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, in a statement on Wednesday highlighted some achievements of President Buhari who took over on May 29 last year. Shehu was reacting to a recent report by the Centre for Democracy and Development which claimed that Buhari had only achieved one out of his 222 tracked electoral promises, representing 0.5 per cent of the promises. But the presidential spokesman said it was unfortunate to attribute to the President promises he did not make during the campaigns and hold him accountable. The presidential spokesman warned the group against misleading Nigerians with its cooked up analysis. According to him, no sincere Nigerian will fail to recognise the courage of the President to tackle corruption in a country where impunity was once celebrated. He said a
