SECURITY UPDATE: Military Rescues 360 Captives in Borno; Oyo Terrorists Issue 4-Point Demand
Major Breakthrough in Borno as Troops Free 360 Captives from Mandara Mountains
In a major operational victory against insurgency, the Nigerian Army has successfully rescued 360 people held captive by Boko Haram in the southern region of Borno State.
The successful operation was executed by troops operating around the notorious Mandara Mountains—a long-standing stronghold for the terrorist faction. The freed hostages, consisting primarily of women and children, had been snatched during various raids across vulnerable rural communities in Borno.
The Human Cost: While the mission is a massive victory, the victory is shadowed by tragedy. Army spokesperson Haruna Sani confirmed that two infants tragically succumbed to medical exhaustion due to the brutal terrain and prolonged hardships endured during captivity.
The surviving evacuees have been moved to secure facilities to undergo medical evaluations and receive immediate humanitarian assistance. Security analysts are labeling this joint offensive a significant tactical blow to Boko Haram's remaining regional influence.
Oyo School Kidnapping: Ansaru Faction Demands ₦1 Billion, Prisoner Swap, and Sharia Law
Meanwhile, tension is mounting in Oyo State as the armed group holding teachers and students captive in Oriire Local Government Area has officially issued a daring 4-point demand to the government.
The abductors—identified as members of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimeena Fii Bilaadis Sudan (popularly known as Ansaru, a dangerous breakaway faction of Boko Haram)—carried out the coordinated assault on schools across the Esinele, Yawota, and Alawusa communities. Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that seven teachers were among those taken, while an Islamic Studies teacher was tragically killed during the initial attack.
According to intelligence reports, the terrorists have established indirect contact and laid down the following conditions for the release of the captives:
- Prisoner Exchange: The immediate release of top detained Ansaru commanders Mahmud Usman (alias Abu Bara’a) and his deputy, Abubakar Abba. Both are currently standing trial in Abuja on severe terrorism charges linked to the 2022 Kuje prison break.
- Financial Ransom: A staggering demand of ₦1 billion, instructed to be paid directly into a designated bank account.
- Logistics: The provision of two brand-new Toyota Hilux vehicles.
- Ideological Mandate: The immediate implementation of Sharia-related law within the region.
The Oyo State Muslim community has swiftly and publicly rejected the terrorists' ideological demands, releasing statements emphasizing that these criminal elements do not represent Islam. Security forces, including the DSS, Police, and military air assets, have heavily cordoned off regional forests as rescue operations and negotiations intensify.
